What can parents do to provide the much-needed support to help their children excel in their exams?
Create a Supportive Environment: Parents can create a conducive environment at home that promotes studying and learning. This includes providing a quiet and comfortable study space, ensuring access to necessary study materials, and minimising distractions such as excessive screen time or noise.
Set Realistic Expectations: It’s important for parents to set realistic expectations for their children during exam time. While it’s natural to want your child to achieve the best possible results, putting excessive pressure on them to perform perfectly can add to their stress and anxiety. Instead, parents should encourage their children to do their best and focus on the process of learning rather than just the outcome of grades.
Offer Guidance: The Change of Mind facility opens on 5th May. Applicants can go in and add or take out courses from their lists up until the 1st July. As a parent it is important to guide your child in this decision making process but ultimately it is their decision to make.
Encourage Healthy Habits: Good physical and mental health are crucial for exam success. Parents can support their children by encouraging healthy habits such as regular exercise, proper nutrition, adequate sleep, and stress management techniques like meditation or deep breathing exercises. A healthy body and mind are better equipped to handle the challenges of exam preparation.
Provide Emotional Support: Preparing for the Leaving Certificate exam can be emotionally taxing for students. Parents can provide emotional support by being there to listen to their children’s concerns and frustrations without judgement, offering encouragement and motivation, and reassuring them of their capabilities. Just knowing that their parents are there to support them can greatly boost a student’s confidence and morale.
Help with Time Management: Time management is crucial during exam preparation. Parents can help their children create a study schedule that allocates time for revision, breaks, and leisure activities. It is something I often do with junior cycle students but works effectively with older students too. This will help students stay organised, manage their time effectively, and avoid last-minute cramming.
Seek Professional Help if Needed: It is perfectly normal for a student to be stressed over the next few weeks. If this stress becomes extraordinary and develops into high levels of anxiety, parents should not hesitate to seek professional help. This can include consulting with teachers, the school’s guidance counsellor, or mental health professionals who can provide additional support and guidance.
Parents play a vital role in supporting their children during the lead-up to the Leaving Certificate exam. By creating a supportive environment, setting realistic expectations, and providing emotional support, parents can empower their children to excel in their exams and achieve success.
