Make the Most of Your Mid-Term Break: Get Ready for the CAO Opening

donnchadh

Your mid-term break isn’t just a chance to relax – it’s also the perfect time to start thinking seriously about your college choices. When you return to school, the CAO opens for applications on Wednesday, 5th November at 12 noon, so use the break wisely to get ahead!

1. Research Your Courses in Detail

Don’t just look at the course title — dig deeper! Degrees with the same name can be very different across colleges. Spend some time researching:

  • Modules: What subjects will you actually study?

  • Specialisations: Can you focus on certain areas or choose electives?

  • Erasmus or study abroad options: Is there an opportunity to study in another country?

  • Work experience: Does the course include placements or internships?

  • Graduate outcomes: What careers do students typically go into?

  • Assessment methods: Are you graded mostly by exams, projects, or continuous assessment?

  • Timetable and workload: How many hours per week are you expected to be in class or labs?

All of this will help you understand what daily life on that course would actually be like — and whether it suits you.

2. Explore College Life Beyond the Course

Your college experience isn’t just about lectures! Look into:

  • Facilities: What kind of libraries, labs, and student supports are available?

  • Clubs and societies: Are there groups or activities that match your interests?

  • Accommodation: Is there student accommodation available? How affordable is it?

  • Commuting: If accommodation is expensive or limited, can you realistically travel to and from the college?

A great course in a college that suits your lifestyle and budget can make all the difference.

3. Still Not Sure What You Want to Study?

4. Don’t Miss the Key Dates!

You are fully responsible for ensuring your CAO application is complete, correct, and submitted on time.

  • CAO opens: Wednesday, 5th November at 12 noon

  • Normal closing date: 20th January (€35 fee)

  • Restricted courses deadline: 1st February

  • Important: Always list your courses in order of genuine preference, not by points or pressure.

The earlier you get started, the less stressful the process will be — and the more confident you’ll feel about your choices.

Bottom line: Use your mid-term break to explore, compare, and plan. The time you invest now will pay off when you’re submitting your CAO form with confidence in January.
