Entry requirements for Irish students

  • Austria has no points system. You need a general university entrance qualification that JKU accepts as equivalent to the Austrian Matura. JKU checks foreign certificates such as the Leaving Certificate case by case, and it can admit you on condition that you pass extra exams. JKU’s pages do not set out specific Leaving Cert rules (such as the number of Higher Level subjects), so contact the JKU Admissions Office (zulassung@jku.at, +43 732 2468 2010) before applying.
  • Maths: JKU does not list a specific maths requirement, but the course is built on mathematics, so Higher Level Maths is strongly advised.
  • English: English at B2 level is required. JKU accepts a pass grade in English on a school-leaving certificate from an EU country, so a Leaving Certificate pass in English should count. IELTS Academic 6.5, TOEFL iBT 88, Cambridge B2 First/C1 Advanced or PTE Academic 70 are also accepted.

How to apply

  1. Check your Leaving Cert with JKUEmail the JKU Admissions Office to confirm that your Leaving Certificate subjects and levels give you general university entrance, and whether any extra exams would be needed.
  2. Apply onlineCreate an applicant account on JKU MyAdmission during the general admission period (for 2026 entry this ran from 8 July to 5 September). Upload your passport, your Leaving Certificate showing all subjects and grades, and proof of English.
  3. Receive your notification letterJKU sends a letter saying whether you are admitted, or admitted with conditions such as supplementary exams.
  4. Enrol and pay the ÖH feeComplete enrolment as JKU instructs and pay the ÖH fee (26.20 euro in 2026/27) before the deadline. Classes start in October.
Deadline for Irish/EU applicants: For winter semester 2026/27, JKU’s general admission period for bachelor’s programmes ran from 8 July to 5 September 2026. A later deadline of 31 October applies only in special circumstances. JKU has not yet published the 2027/28 dates, so expect an admission period running from about early July to 5 September 2027 and check JKU’s ‘Dates & Deadlines’ page. Apply early in the period because your Leaving Certificate has to be checked. The programme starts in the winter semester (October), and JKU recommends starting then because all courses are offered only once a year..

Costs

  • EU/EEA citizens pay no tuition as long as they finish within the standard programme length plus two extra ‘tolerance’ semesters. After that, tuition is 363.36 euro per semester. All students pay the Austrian Student Union (ÖH) fee of 26.20 euro every semester (JKU figure for winter term 2026/27). These figures are for 2026/27 and may change slightly for 2027/28.
JKU does not publish specific Leaving Certificate rules, so check your eligibility with the Admissions Office well before the September deadline. The 2027 dates are expected to follow the 2026 pattern but had not been published when this page was checked.
