About the course

A six-year Master’s degree in Medicine taught in English at the Faculty of Medicine, leading to the qualification ‘Physician’. The final stage is pre-graduation practice, done as rotations in the university hospitals. English-taught students also take a compulsory Bulgarian language course for socialisation.

Entry requirements for Irish students

  • The university assesses the Irish Leaving Certificate individually and does not publish a fixed Irish requirement. Contact admissions to confirm. Your school diploma must be legalised, translated into Bulgarian, and recognised by Bulgaria’s NACID. You also need a certificate confirming that the diploma gives access to higher education.
  • Entrance exam taken remotely in English, Biology and Chemistry. The score is out of 42 (three times the Biology mark, plus three times the Chemistry mark, plus the English mark). If you fail any component, you fail the whole exam.
  • English is tested as part of the entrance exam. The admissions page does not mention IELTS/TOEFL certificates or exemptions.

Working in Ireland afterwards

Because your medical degree comes from an EU/EEA country, the Medical Council of Ireland can recognise it automatically under EU Directive 2005/36/EC, as long as it is listed in Annex V (point 5.1.1). If that listing says the degree must come with an internship or state-exam certificate from your home country, you need to have that too, and you must also show your current professional standing and meet the English-language requirements. Graduates of EU/EEA medical schools may apply to the HSE for Irish intern posts, but only if their home-country degree does not already count as complete training. In older HSE intern guides (e.g., the 2022 guide), only graduates from medical schools in Ireland, Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Italy, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Poland, Portugal, Iceland and Slovenia could apply. Graduates from other EEA countries (and Italians holding the ‘abilitante’ degree) were told they are not eligible, because they qualify directly for General registration. Applicants who need no work permit were matched before those who do. Please check the current eligibility list in the HSE intern guide for the year you apply. We could not confirm it for the July 2027 intake because the current HSE guide pages are password-protected.

Costs

  • Tuition for Medicine in English is EUR 9,950 a year for EU/EEA students (2026/27). It is paid in two equal instalments, one per semester, and new first-year students must pay the semester fee before their registration appointment. One-off fees: EUR 55 to submit documents and EUR 210 for the entrance exam in English, Biology and Chemistry (plus EUR 15.34 for a training manual).
The Medical Council of Ireland can recognise an EU medical degree automatically under Directive 2005/36/EC if it is listed in Annex V. Check the current HSE intern guide to see whether you can apply for Irish intern posts, because graduates from many EEA countries have not been eligible: they qualify directly for General registration. Official university documents are issued in Bulgarian, and a Bulgarian language course is compulsory for English-programme students.
