About the course

A six-year Master’s degree in Medicine taught in English: 10 semesters of study followed by a 12-month pre-diploma clinical clerkship. Bulgarian is a compulsory subject in the first two years because clinical training from year three requires communicating with patients in Bulgarian.

Entry requirements for Irish students

  • The university assesses the Irish Leaving Certificate individually and does not publish a fixed Irish requirement. Contact admissions to confirm. Its general rule is that applicants must have studied Biology and Chemistry at school with an average of at least 62% of the maximum mark in their country’s grading system, and a NACID certificate of completed secondary education is required.
  • Online entrance tests in Biology and Chemistry (in English), plus an English diagnostic test. Score = Biology x3 + Chemistry x3 + English mark, maximum 42, minimum 21. In the final 2026 ranking (24 September) the lowest admitted score for Medicine was 25.89.
  • English: the general information page says the diagnostic test requires at least B1 level. The FAQ says applicants whose native language is English do not need to sit the English exam, so check with admissions whether this applies to you.

Working in Ireland afterwards

Because your medical degree comes from an EU/EEA country, the Medical Council of Ireland can recognise it automatically under EU Directive 2005/36/EC, as long as it is listed in Annex V (point 5.1.1). If that listing says the degree must come with an internship or state-exam certificate from your home country, you need to have that too, and you must also show your current professional standing and meet the English-language requirements. Graduates of EU/EEA medical schools may apply to the HSE for Irish intern posts, but only if their home-country degree does not already count as complete training. In older HSE intern guides (e.g., the 2022 guide), only graduates from medical schools in Ireland, Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Italy, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Poland, Portugal, Iceland and Slovenia could apply. Graduates from other EEA countries (and Italians holding the ‘abilitante’ degree) were told they are not eligible, because they qualify directly for General registration. Applicants who need no work permit were matched before those who do. Please check the current eligibility list in the HSE intern guide for the year you apply. We could not confirm it for the July 2027 intake because the current HSE guide pages are password-protected.

How to apply

  1. Register for an online entrance testCreate an account on the university’s online registration system (opened 2 March in 2026) and choose an exam date between April and August. Pay EUR 300 by card.
  2. Sit the Biology, Chemistry and English testsRevise using the university’s official exam programmes, test question banks and sample answer sheets. Your ranking score is out of 42.
  3. Submit documents by early SeptemberSend the signed application form, Leaving Certificate and transcript (legalised and translated as required), NACID certificate, a document confirming your right to enter higher education, a copy of your passport and four 4×5 cm photos, on paper and scanned on a flash drive. The 2026 deadline was 11 September.
  4. Enrol after rankingCheck the published rankings and, if admitted, enrol within the announced window (for example, 16 to 18 September 2026 after the first September ranking) and pay the first year’s tuition.
Deadline for Irish/EU applicants: 2026 cycle: online registration opened 2 March 2026. Online entrance tests were held on 15 April, 15 May, 16 June, 17 July and 18 August 2026, with a re-sit on 4 September 2026; registration closed about a week before each date (e.g. 8 April for the April test, 30 August for the re-sit). All documents had to reach the Admissions Office by 11 September 2026. 2027 dates are not yet published; confirm them with the university..

Costs

  • EUR 10,000 per year for the English-taught Medicine programme in 2026/27. The university publishes one fee for its English programmes and does not list a lower EU rate, so expect to pay it as an Irish student. Entrance test fees: EUR 300 per standard exam date (EUR 30 data processing plus EUR 270 for the tests), or EUR 400 for the September re-sit; paid online by card and non-refundable after the registration deadline. The 2027/28 fee has not yet been published.
Because your medical degree comes from an EU country, the Medical Council of Ireland can recognise it automatically under Directive 2005/36/EC (Annex V), provided you meet any home-country certificate conditions, show current professional standing and meet the English requirements; check the current HSE intern guide for whether you are eligible for Irish intern posts. Bulgarian is compulsory in years one and two and is needed for patient contact from year three.
