About the course

This is a 6-year Master’s programme in General Medicine, taught in English at Charles University’s Third Faculty of Medicine in Prague, leading to the MUDr. degree. Up to 25 of the roughly 90 places can go to applicants admitted without sitting the entrance exam, based on previous results.

Entry requirements for Irish students

  • The university assesses the Irish Leaving Certificate individually and does not publish a fixed Irish requirement. Contact admissions to confirm. The faculty assesses foreign school-leaving certificates for a CZK 930 fee and asks for a notary-verified copy (or the original) with a transcript of grades, translated into English or Czech if needed and authenticated with an Apostille or Superlegalisation. The Leaving Certificate is not named on the list for admission without the exam, which covers A-levels (at least A, A, B in English, Chemistry and Biology), IB Higher Level results, German school results, a relevant bachelor’s degree, or comparable exams at the 85th percentile.
  • Entrance exam (2026 cycle): an electronic written test of 60 multiple-choice questions, 30 in Biology and 30 in Chemistry (0-60 points), then a 10-minute interview covering text interpretation, general knowledge and communication (12-62 points). The Dean sets the pass mark.
  • English: the exam and interview are in English. The pages we checked do not ask for a separate English-language certificate.

Working in Ireland afterwards

Because your medical degree comes from an EU/EEA country, the Medical Council of Ireland can recognise it automatically under EU Directive 2005/36/EC, as long as it is listed in Annex V (point 5.1.1). If that listing says the degree must come with an internship or state-exam certificate from your home country, you need to have that too, and you must also show your current professional standing and meet the English-language requirements. Graduates of EU/EEA medical schools may apply to the HSE for Irish intern posts, but only if their home-country degree does not already count as complete training. In older HSE intern guides (e.g., the 2022 guide), only graduates from medical schools in Ireland, Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Italy, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Poland, Portugal, Iceland and Slovenia could apply. Graduates from other EEA countries (and Italians holding the ‘abilitante’ degree) were told they are not eligible, because they qualify directly for General registration. Applicants who need no work permit were matched before those who do. Please check the current eligibility list in the HSE intern guide for the year you apply. We could not confirm it for the July 2027 intake because the current HSE guide pages are password-protected.

How to apply

  1. Apply onlineSubmit an application for General Medicine in English through the Charles University online application and pay the application fee. The 2027 deadline has not been published; in 2023 applications closed on 31 March or 30 April, depending on the exam date.
  2. Sit the entrance examTake the 60-question Biology and Chemistry test and the 10-minute interview. In 2026 the Prague exam was on 29 May, with an alternative date of 2 July, and there were exam dates in the UK on 19 April and 2 July.
  3. Send your documentsAfter you are admitted, post a notary-verified copy of your Leaving Certificate and transcript, authenticated with an Apostille and translated into English or Czech if needed, plus a copy of your passport, to the Study Division at Ruska 87, Prague 10. Pay the CZK 930 recognition fee online. Send them as soon as possible and by enrolment day in September at the latest.
  4. Enrol and payEnrol in September and pay the CZK 420,000 annual fee by 30 October. EU citizens need no visa but must report a stay longer than 30 days to the Czech Foreign Police. You need health insurance and hepatitis B and measles vaccinations before clinical practice starts.
Deadline for Irish/EU applicants: The 2027 dates were not published when we checked. In the 2026 cycle, applications for admission without the exam had to be sent by 15 April 2026. The Prague entrance exam was held on 29 May 2026, with an alternative date of 2 July 2026. Exams were also held abroad, including in the UK on 19 April and 2 July 2026. The general application deadline for 2026 could not be confirmed; in 2023 it was 31 March for the April/May exams and 30 April for the June exams. You must send your school documents by the day you enrol in September at the latest, and the faculty recommends sending them as soon as possible..

Costs

  • The faculty charges CZK 420,000 per academic year for General Medicine taught in English (roughly EUR 17,000, depending on the exchange rate), payable by 30 October. The faculty page does not say which academic year this fee applies to. Fees for English-taught programmes in the Czech Republic are charged to EU students too; only Czech-taught programmes are free. There is also a CZK 930 fee for the faculty to assess a foreign school-leaving certificate, paid in the online application. There is an application fee as well: it was CZK 830 in the 2023 cycle, and the current amount has not been confirmed.
Because the degree comes from an EU country, the Medical Council of Ireland can recognise it automatically under Directive 2005/36/EC if it is listed in Annex V, and you must also show professional standing and meet English-language requirements. The Czech Republic was not on the 2022 HSE list of countries whose graduates could apply for Irish intern posts, because those graduates qualify directly for General registration; check the current HSE intern guide for the year you apply.
