About the course

This six-year Medical Doctor (MUDr.) degree is taught in English at Charles University’s First Faculty of Medicine in Prague. The first three years cover theoretical and pre-clinical subjects, and the last three years are clinical. About 800 international students study on the faculty’s English-taught programmes.

Entry requirements for Irish students

  • The university assesses the Irish Leaving Certificate individually and does not publish a fixed Irish requirement. Contact admissions to confirm. After you pass the entrance exam, you must prove you have completed secondary school by having your school-leaving certificate assessed by the faculty (nostrification). In the 2026 cycle, hard copies of your documents were due by 31 August.
  • Round 1 is a paper-based written test lasting 90 minutes. It has single-best-answer questions in Biology, Chemistry and General Science (data interpretation, graphs and maths problem-solving): 75 points in total, 25 per subject, with no negative marking. Round 2 is five online Multiple Mini Interviews (MMIs) of 10 minutes each, worth up to 20 points each (100 in total). The faculty says only the Round 2 score decides who is admitted.
  • For 2026/27 the faculty did not require an English language certificate.

Working in Ireland afterwards

Because your medical degree comes from an EU/EEA country, the Medical Council of Ireland can recognise it automatically under EU Directive 2005/36/EC, as long as it is listed in Annex V (point 5.1.1). If that listing says the degree must come with an internship or state-exam certificate from your home country, you need to have that too, and you must also show your current professional standing and meet the English-language requirements. Graduates of EU/EEA medical schools may apply to the HSE for Irish intern posts, but only if their home-country degree does not already count as complete training. In older HSE intern guides (e.g., the 2022 guide), only graduates from medical schools in Ireland, Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Italy, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Poland, Portugal, Iceland and Slovenia could apply. Graduates from other EEA countries (and Italians holding the ‘abilitante’ degree) were told they are not eligible, because they qualify directly for General registration. Applicants who need no work permit were matched before those who do. Please check the current eligibility list in the HSE intern guide for the year you apply. We could not confirm it for the July 2027 intake because the current HSE guide pages are password-protected.

Deadline for Irish/EU applicants: In the 2026/27 cycle, applications were open from 1 December 2025 to 5 September 2026. The faculty’s test-dates page listed a written test in Prague on 8 June 2026, and the admissions page listed Prague sittings on 16 September 2026, with 23 September 2026 as an additional date. There were also sittings abroad between May and September 2026, run with the faculty’s listed representatives (London on 4 July and 25 August 2026, for example). The online MMI interviews usually take place within a week of the written test. Dates for 2027 entry have not been published yet, so check with the faculty..

Costs

  • EUR 24,250 per year for the English-taught programme, which is charged to EU students as well. The faculty says the full fee must be paid before enrolment, with no instalments. There is also an application fee of EUR 285, which you must pay before you can sit the entrance exam, and a CZK 990 fee (about EUR 40) to have your school-leaving certificate assessed. These figures are for 2026/27. Fees for 2027/28 have not been published yet.
Because this is an EU medical degree, the Medical Council of Ireland can recognise it automatically under Directive 2005/36/EC, as long as it is listed in Annex V (point 5.1.1). You must also meet any certificate conditions in that listing, show your professional standing and meet the English-language requirements. Czech graduates were not on the older HSE list of graduates eligible for Irish intern posts (2022 guide), so check the current HSE intern guide for the year you apply.
