About the course

A six-year, full-time medical degree taught in English that leads to the title Doctor of General Medicine (MUDr./MD). Years 1 to 3 cover theory and practical work at the Plzeňská campus. Years 4 to 6 are block clinical rotations at Motol and Homolka University Hospitals in Prague.

Entry requirements for Irish students

  • The university assesses the Irish Leaving Certificate individually and does not publish a fixed Irish requirement. Contact admissions to confirm. You need completed secondary education with a final leaving examination. The Leaving Certificate is not on the faculty’s list of qualifications that exempt you from the entrance exam, so Irish applicants should expect to sit it. For authentication, Irish documents are listed under apostille. As an EU country, Ireland may instead use an authenticated copy if the school confirms your results, sends them to the faculty directly, or the results can be checked on the school’s website.
  • Entrance exam: a 90-minute written test of 75 questions (20 Biology, 20 Chemistry, 20 Physics, 15 Logic) at secondary-school level, with a maximum of 225 points. The applicants with the best test scores are invited to an interview with a three-member panel (maximum 90 points). There you discuss two randomly drawn topics and show your interest in medicine. Places go to the highest total scores, within the programme’s capacity.
  • English: the faculty says English proficiency is assessed as part of the exam or through documents. No specific test or score is published.

Working in Ireland afterwards

Because your medical degree comes from an EU/EEA country, the Medical Council of Ireland can recognise it automatically under EU Directive 2005/36/EC, as long as it is listed in Annex V (point 5.1.1). If that listing says the degree must come with an internship or state-exam certificate from your home country, you need to have that too, and you must also show your current professional standing and meet the English-language requirements. Graduates of EU/EEA medical schools may apply to the HSE for Irish intern posts, but only if their home-country degree does not already count as complete training. In older HSE intern guides (e.g., the 2022 guide), only graduates from medical schools in Ireland, Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Italy, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Poland, Portugal, Iceland and Slovenia could apply. Graduates from other EEA countries (and Italians holding the ‘abilitante’ degree) were told they are not eligible, because they qualify directly for General registration. Applicants who need no work permit were matched before those who do. Please check the current eligibility list in the HSE intern guide for the year you apply. We could not confirm it for the July 2027 intake because the current HSE guide pages are password-protected.

Costs

  • 420,000 CZK per academic year for students enrolling in 2026/27 (about EUR 17,100; the euro figure is approximate and moves with the exchange rate). The programme is fee-paying, so the fee applies to EU students too. The faculty says fees are set for each academic year and may vary by year of enrolment, and they do not cover living costs. One-off costs: a 2,500 CZK application fee (about EUR 100) and a 990 CZK fee (about EUR 40) for the faculty’s assessment of your foreign secondary-school qualification.
Because your medical degree comes from an EU country, the Medical Council of Ireland can recognise it automatically under EU Directive 2005/36/EC, as long as it is listed in Annex V. You must also show your current professional standing and meet the English-language requirements. In older HSE intern guides, graduates from Czech medical schools could not apply for Irish intern posts because they qualify directly for General registration, so check the current HSE intern guide for the year you apply.
