About the course

This six-year Master’s programme in General Medicine is taught in English and leads to the MUDr. degree, which the faculty describes as equal to an MD. Years 1 and 2 cover the basic sciences, years 3 and 4 bring in clinical subjects with placements at the University Hospital, and years 5 and 6 are clinical training in small groups, ending with state exams.

Entry requirements for Irish students

  • The university assesses the Irish Leaving Certificate individually and does not publish a fixed Irish requirement. Contact admissions to confirm. The faculty says you are eligible if you have completed secondary school and your qualifications would get you into the same kind of programme in your home country.
  • Entrance exam (100 points in total): a 60-point multiple-choice written test covering Biology (25), Chemistry (25) and Physics or Mathematics (10), followed by a 40-point interview. The interview has two parts: understanding and analysing scientific and medical information (20), and your personal profile, ethics, communication and teamwork (20). The online written test is run by Scio and the interviews are held on MS Teams.
  • English: the entrance exam is held in English. The faculty does not publish a separate English certificate requirement.

Working in Ireland afterwards

Because your medical degree comes from an EU/EEA country, the Medical Council of Ireland can recognise it automatically under EU Directive 2005/36/EC, as long as it is listed in Annex V (point 5.1.1). If that listing says the degree must come with an internship or state-exam certificate from your home country, you need to have that too, and you must also show your current professional standing and meet the English-language requirements. Graduates of EU/EEA medical schools may apply to the HSE for Irish intern posts, but only if their home-country degree does not already count as complete training. In older HSE intern guides (e.g., the 2022 guide), only graduates from medical schools in Ireland, Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Italy, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Poland, Portugal, Iceland and Slovenia could apply. Graduates from other EEA countries (and Italians holding the ‘abilitante’ degree) were told they are not eligible, because they qualify directly for General registration. Applicants who need no work permit were matched before those who do. Please check the current eligibility list in the HSE intern guide for the year you apply. We could not confirm it for the July 2027 intake because the current HSE guide pages are password-protected.

How to apply

  1. Apply onlineComplete the Charles University e-application for the English-language General Medicine programme and pay the CZK 2,500 fee. In 2026 the online-exam deadline was 30 April, and every application had to be submitted and paid by 7 May.
  2. Sit the written testAnswer multiple-choice questions on Biology, Chemistry and Physics or Mathematics, either online through Scio or in Hradec Kralove. The 2026 test was on 13 May. Bring a calculator and your passport.
  3. Do the interviewRegister for an MS Teams interview slot. It is worth 40 of the 100 points and covers scientific reasoning, ethics, communication and teamwork.
  4. Confirm your placeWithin 14 days of the results, decide whether to accept. If you accept, confirm your interest in studying to secure your place, then follow the faculty’s enrolment instructions.
Deadline for Irish/EU applicants: 2026 cycle (latest published): for the online exam, apply by 30 April 2026. The written test (online or in Hradec Kralove) was on 13 May 2026, and the MS Teams interview dates were to be announced. Exams were also held abroad with cooperating agencies (for example London on 1 July 2026). Every application, whatever the exam term, had to be submitted and paid by 7 May 2026, and at least one week before the exam you choose. Dates for 2027 entry are not published yet..

Costs

  • CZK 400,000 per year for 2026/27 (roughly EUR 16,000, depending on the exchange rate). EU students pay this fee too, because the English-language programme is fee-paying. The same programme is also taught in Czech with no tuition fee, but you would need to study in Czech. The tuition fee is non-refundable. There is also a CZK 2,500 application fee. The 2027/28 fee has not been published yet.
This is an EU medical degree, so the Medical Council of Ireland can recognise it automatically under Directive 2005/36/EC, as long as it is listed in Annex V. You must also show your current professional standing and meet the English-language requirements. In the 2022 HSE intern guide, Czech graduates were not eligible for Irish intern posts because they qualify directly for General registration, so check the current HSE guide for the year you apply.
