About the course

A six-year Czech medical degree (MUDr.) taught entirely in English at Palacky University’s Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry in Olomouc. Students also take compulsory Czech language classes in the first three years.

Entry requirements for Irish students

  • The university assesses the Irish Leaving Certificate individually and does not publish a fixed Irish requirement. It asks for completed A-levels in three subjects or an equivalent completed secondary school education, with no minimum grades stated. Contact admissions to confirm.
  • Entrance exam: a written test in Biology, Chemistry, and Physics or Mathematics, taken online or in person. Sample tests and a list of topics and recommended reading are published on the faculty website. No interview is mentioned.
  • English: applicants need Cambridge FCE or higher, IELTS 6, TOEFL 87 or PTE Academic 59 (or a psychometric test), or must pass the university’s own English test. Applicants who show that their secondary or tertiary education was in English are exempt.

Working in Ireland afterwards

Because your medical degree comes from an EU/EEA country, the Medical Council of Ireland can recognise it automatically under EU Directive 2005/36/EC, as long as it is listed in Annex V (point 5.1.1). If that listing says the degree must come with an internship or state-exam certificate from your home country, you need to have that too, and you must also show your current professional standing and meet the English-language requirements. Graduates of EU/EEA medical schools may apply to the HSE for Irish intern posts, but only if their home-country degree does not already count as complete training. In older HSE intern guides (e.g., the 2022 guide), only graduates from medical schools in Ireland, Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Italy, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Poland, Portugal, Iceland and Slovenia could apply. Graduates from other EEA countries (and Italians holding the ‘abilitante’ degree) were told they are not eligible, because they qualify directly for General registration. Applicants who need no work permit were matched before those who do. Please check the current eligibility list in the HSE intern guide for the year you apply. We could not confirm it for the July 2027 intake because the current HSE guide pages are password-protected.

How to apply

  1. Prepare your documentsGather your Leaving Certificate results (or school transcript), passport details and proof that your schooling was in English, which exempts you from the English test.
  2. Apply online and pay the feeSubmit the application form on the university portal (studium.upol.cz) and pay the EUR 80 fee. In the 2026 cycle applications opened on 1 November 2025 and had to be complete two weeks before your chosen exam date.
  3. Sit the entrance examTake the Biology, Chemistry, and Physics or Mathematics test online or in Olomouc. In the 2026 cycle dates ran from January to August 2026.
  4. Accept your offer and enrolIf you are offered a place, follow the faculty’s enrolment instructions and pay the first year’s tuition (EUR 12,500 in 2026/27) before starting in September.
Deadline for Irish/EU applicants: For September 2026 entry, applications opened on 1 November 2025 and the faculty said they would stay open until 31 July 2026. Your complete application (documents uploaded and fee paid) had to be submitted at least two weeks before the entrance exam date you chose. In that cycle there were more than 20 exam dates between January and August 2026, online and in person in Olomouc and Tel Aviv; the late August online dates were only for EU citizens or holders of a valid residence permit. The 2027 dates were not yet published; confirm on the faculty website..

Costs

  • EUR 12,500 per year for the English-taught General Medicine programme (figure published for September 2026 entry). The faculty publishes one fee with no separate EU rate, so expect to pay it as an Irish/EU student; fees for English-language programmes in the Czech Republic are usually charged to EU students too. There is also a non-refundable application fee of EUR 80 per application, paid online.
Because this is an EU medical degree, the Medical Council of Ireland can recognise it automatically under Directive 2005/36/EC if it is listed in Annex V; you must also show your current professional standing and meet the English-language requirements. In older HSE intern guides, Czech graduates were not among those eligible for Irish intern posts because they qualify directly for General registration, so check the current HSE guide; Czech language classes are compulsory in the first three years.
