About the course

A six-year, full-time programme taught in English at Charles University’s medical faculty in Pilsen, leading to the MUDr. degree. Theoretical and pre-clinical subjects are taught in winter and summer semesters, each with a teaching period followed by exams. During the course, students must also pass exams in Latin, English and one other foreign language.

Entry requirements for Irish students

  • The university assesses the Irish Leaving Certificate individually and does not publish a fixed Irish requirement. Contact admissions to confirm. By 31 August you must send notarised copies of your school-leaving documents, either for assessment by the faculty (990 CZK) or with a general recognition (nostrification) certificate from a Czech regional authority.
  • Entrance exam in Biology (general and cell biology, genetics, human biology, ecology), Chemistry (general and inorganic, organic chemistry and biochemistry) and Physics (units, mechanics, thermodynamics, electricity and magnetism, optics and acoustics). Sample tests are on the faculty website.
  • The admissions page does not state an English-language certificate requirement.

Working in Ireland afterwards

Because your medical degree comes from an EU/EEA country, the Medical Council of Ireland can recognise it automatically under EU Directive 2005/36/EC, as long as it is listed in Annex V (point 5.1.1). If that listing says the degree must come with an internship or state-exam certificate from your home country, you need to have that too, and you must also show your current professional standing and meet the English-language requirements. Graduates of EU/EEA medical schools may apply to the HSE for Irish intern posts, but only if their home-country degree does not already count as complete training. In older HSE intern guides (e.g., the 2022 guide), only graduates from medical schools in Ireland, Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Italy, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Poland, Portugal, Iceland and Slovenia could apply. Graduates from other EEA countries (and Italians holding the ‘abilitante’ degree) were told they are not eligible, because they qualify directly for General registration. Applicants who need no work permit were matched before those who do. Please check the current eligibility list in the HSE intern guide for the year you apply. We could not confirm it for the July 2027 intake because the current HSE guide pages are password-protected.

The regular entrance exam was in Pilsen on 3 June 2026, with an alternative date on 24 June 2026. Costs

  • Tuition is 390,000 CZK a year for 2026/27 (roughly €15,600 at current exchange rates; the faculty quotes CZK only). The faculty sets this fee for the English-taught programme, and all new first-year students must pay it in full, with no instalments. It is not refunded, even in part, if you leave during the year. One-off fees: an application fee of 940 CZK online (990 CZK on paper), which is not refunded if you fail or miss the exam, and a 990 CZK fee for the faculty to assess your secondary school documents. Fees for 2027/28 are not yet published.
As the degree is from an EU country, the Medical Council of Ireland can recognise it automatically under Directive 2005/36/EC if it is listed in Annex V (point 5.1.1). You must also show current professional standing and meet the English-language requirements. Czech graduates were not on the 2022 HSE intern eligible list (graduates of those countries qualified directly for General registration), so check the current HSE intern guide for the year you apply.
