About the course

A three-year (six-semester) programme taught in English at BTU in Cottbus. It combines natural sciences, technical subjects, social sciences and economics to cover environmental planning, resource protection and risk assessment. There is no admission cap (NC) and no pre-study internship requirement.

Entry requirements for Irish students

  • German recognition rules (KMK/ZAB) say the Leaving Certificate gives direct university entry only with the right subject and level mix. You need six subjects, at least two at Higher Level with H5 or better and the other four at O6/H6 or better. The six must include two languages and Maths at O5/H6 or better. For science and engineering courses, you also need Higher Level Maths at H5 and a Higher Level science at H5. BTU publishes no Ireland-specific rules, so uni-assist and BTU will make the final assessment.
  • No admission cap (zulassungsfrei): there is no ranking on grades and no entrance test.
  • English: BTU asks for TOEFL iBT 79 or an equivalent, but applicants from Ireland are exempt, as are applicants who completed their secondary education in English in Ireland.

How to apply

  1. Check your Leaving Cert subjectsMake sure you will have six subjects including two languages, plus Higher Level Maths and a Higher Level science at H5 or better.
  2. Check the 2027 datesIn spring 2027, check BTU’s winter 2027/28 schedule of deadlines. For 2026, uni-assist applications opened on 1 March and closed on 15 August for EU citizens.
  3. Apply through uni-assistSubmit your application through uni-assist before the deadline, with your Leaving Cert results and passport, and pay the uni-assist fee.
  4. Enrol and payAfter admission, enrol at BTU, pay the semester contribution and arrange housing in Cottbus before the October start.
Deadline for Irish/EU applicants: The course starts in the winter semester (October). For 2026 entry, BTU’s deadline for EU citizens with a foreign school-leaving certificate, which includes the Irish Leaving Cert, was 15 August 2026. Applications went through uni-assist and opened on 1 March. The 2027/28 dates had not been announced separately when we checked, so expect a similar deadline of about 15 August 2027 and confirm it on BTU’s winter 2027/28 schedule in spring 2027..

Costs

  • No tuition fees for EU students at this public university. You pay only a semester contribution, currently €391.80 per semester (about €784 a year) according to BTU’s programme page. The amount is set each year, so check the 2027/28 figure with BTU. uni-assist also charges its own application-processing fee.
There is no tuition fee and no admission cap, and Irish applicants don’t need an English test. But you need Higher Level Maths and a Higher Level science at H5 or better for your Leaving Cert to count as a German entry qualification for a science course.
