About the course

A six-semester Bachelor of Science from FAU’s Faculty of Engineering, taught completely in English at the Erlangen campus, on the technologies behind autonomous systems. There is no numerus clausus (grade cut-off); instead applicants go through a qualification assessment process. The course starts each winter semester.

Entry requirements for Irish students

  • Germany: the Leaving Cert gives direct university entry only if you have the subject and level combination German rules require. That means six subjects, including two languages and Maths, with at least two Higher Level subjects at H5 or better and the rest at O6/H6 or better. LCA and LCVP are not accepted. Confirm with FAU admissions.
  • Maths and science: FAU’s programme page does not list specific Maths or science grades. It only says a basic knowledge of engineering helps. German recognition rules may still require Higher Level Maths and a Higher Level science for engineering entry, so check with FAU admissions.
  • English: FAU asks for proof of English at level B2 (CEFR) or higher. Whether Leaving Cert English counts as proof could not be verified, so ask FAU admissions. No German is required for entry.

How to apply

  1. Check your subjectsMake sure your Leaving Cert plan meets the German subject rules: six subjects, including two languages and Maths, with at least two at Higher Level H5 or better. Taking Higher Level Maths and a science is strongly advised.
  2. Prepare for the qualification assessmentThere is no grade cut-off, but FAU runs a qualification assessment process for this course. Check the FAU programme page for what it involves and which documents you need.
  3. Apply online by 15 JulyApply through FAU’s online portal before the deadline for international applicants (15 July in recent years). Confirm the 2027 date and application route on fau.eu.
  4. Enrol and find housingOnce admitted, pay the semester contribution, enrol for the October start, and start looking for accommodation in Erlangen early.
Deadline for Irish/EU applicants: FAU’s Faculty of Engineering lists 15 July as the application deadline for international applicants (31 August applies to applicants with German qualifications). The course starts in the winter semester (October). FAU has not yet published dates for 2027 entry, so confirm the deadline on the FAU programme page in spring 2027..

Costs

  • No tuition fees for EU students at FAU, which is a public university. You pay only a semester contribution each semester (in Germany this is usually a few hundred euro or less per semester). We could not check FAU’s exact figure for 2027, so confirm it on the FAU website.
There is no tuition, only a semester contribution. There is no numerus clausus, but you must pass FAU’s qualification assessment process and show English at B2 level.
