About the course

A Bachelor of Engineering in electrical engineering and information technology at a university of applied sciences, taught 100% in English. It lasts seven semesters (210 ECTS). The first two semesters cover the basics. You then pick a specialisation: automation technology, robotics, information technology or sensor technology. Semester 5 is a full practical training semester. Semesters 6 and 7 cover focus subjects, project work and the bachelor thesis. German language classes are part of the course.

Entry requirements for Irish students

  • Germany’s recognition rules (KMK/ZAB, anabin) give the Leaving Certificate direct university entry only with the right subject mix: six subjects, at least two at Higher Level with H5 or better, the other four at O6/H6 or better, including two languages and Maths. For engineering you also need Higher Level Maths at H5 or better and a Higher Level science at H5 or better. LCA and LCVP are not accepted. HKA publishes nothing specific about Irish applicants, so confirm with HKA admissions.
  • English: HKA asks all international applicants for an English certificate (TOEFL iBT 83 or an equivalent test), which you must have by enrolment at the latest. HKA does not say whether Irish applicants or Leaving Cert English are exempt, so ask admissions before you book a test.
  • German: even though teaching is in English, you must hand in a German A1 certificate no later than 6 weeks after lectures start.

How to apply

  1. Check your subjectsMake sure you are on track for Higher Level Maths at H5 and a Higher Level science at H5, and that you meet the six-subject rule. Entry in Germany depends on these rules, not on CAO points.
  2. Sort out English and GermanAsk HKA whether Leaving Cert English is enough. If it is not, book TOEFL iBT (83 or more) or an equivalent test. Start learning German now, because you need an A1 certificate within 6 weeks of lectures starting.
  3. Apply on the HKA portalApply online through HKA’s portal (HISinOne). Applications are online only. For 2026 the portal ran from early May to 15 September. Check the 2027 dates in spring 2027, then upload your Leaving Cert results and language certificates.
  4. Enrol and find housingOnce you are admitted, enrol and pay the €188 semester fee. Start looking for accommodation in Karlsruhe early, as student housing is in high demand.
Deadline for Irish/EU applicants: For the 2026 intake, HKA’s online portal opened at the start of May and closes on 15 September 2026. The course starts in the winter semester (October) only. HKA has not yet published the 2027 dates. Expect a similar May to mid-September window, and check the programme page from spring 2027..

Costs

  • No tuition fees for EU students, including Irish students. All students pay a fee of €188 a semester (about €376 a year). Students from outside the EU pay €1,500 tuition per semester on top of this. HKA does not list an application fee.
The course is 100% in English and EU students pay no tuition, only a €188 semester fee. You still need Higher Level Maths and a Higher Level science at H5 or better to qualify for engineering in Germany, and a German A1 certificate soon after you start.
