About the course

A seven-semester (210 ECTS) degree with all modules taught in English, covering core physics (mechanics, electrodynamics, thermodynamics, quantum physics) alongside statistics, machine learning and computational data analysis. It includes a practical semester in the fifth semester (which can be done entirely abroad) and electives in areas such as photonics, semiconductor technology, materials and renewable energy.

Entry requirements for Irish students

  • Germany’s recognition rules (KMK/ZAB) give Leaving Cert holders direct entry only with six subjects, at least two at Higher Level H5 or better, the rest at O6/H6 or better, including two languages and Maths at O5/H6 or better. For science and engineering you also need Higher Level Maths at H5 and a Higher Level science at H5. LCA and LCVP are not accepted. HM publishes nothing Ireland-specific, so confirm with HM admissions.
  • Admission is restricted (numerus clausus): your Leaving Cert is converted to a German grade and the highest grades get offers. You must first get a VPD from uni-assist, then apply on HM’s portal using hochschulstart BID/BAN login details.
  • English at B2 level is required by enrolment at the latest; HM does not say whether Leaving Cert English counts, so check with admissions. German at A2 must be shown during the early semesters (HM pages say by the end of the second or third semester), not at application.

How to apply

  1. Check your subjectsMake sure your Leaving Cert includes Higher Level Maths at H5 and a Higher Level science (ideally Physics) at H5, plus the general German subject rules.
  2. Get a uni-assist VPDIn spring 2027, apply to uni-assist for a VPD with your results, certified translations if needed and passport, and pay €75. Allow 6-8 weeks.
  3. Apply to HMBetween 2 May and 15 July 2027, register with hochschulstart for your BID/BAN, then apply on HM’s online portal with your VPD and B2 English proof.
  4. Offer and enrolmentAdmission letters come around mid-August; enrol, pay the semester contribution and start in October 2027. Plan to reach A2 German in your first year.
Deadline for Irish/EU applicants: HM’s application window for winter semester entry runs from 2 May to 15 July, and all certificates must reach HM by 15 July. Get your uni-assist VPD first, as it takes 6-8 weeks. Admission letters are sent around mid-August. Winter start only. These are HM’s standing annual dates; confirm the 2027 dates with HM..

Costs

  • No tuition fees for EU students at this public university of applied sciences. HM lists a basic Studierendenwerk (student services) contribution of €97 per semester, about €194 a year; a public transport semester ticket is optional and extra. The uni-assist pre-check (VPD) costs €75.
There is no tuition fee, only about €97 a semester, but you need Higher Level Maths and a Higher Level science at H5 to qualify, and you must reach A2 German early in the course. Budget for Munich rents, which are among the highest in Germany.
