About the course

A seven-semester Bachelor of Engineering taught in English on the Lippstadt campus, combining electronics and computer science, including hardware and software development, control and cyber-physical systems. Semester 5 is a practical semester, which you can spend abroad, and semesters 6-7 offer a specialisation in Autonomous Systems or Embedded Electronic Engineering.

Entry requirements for Irish students

  • Under Germany’s recognition rules (KMK/ZAB, on anabin), the Leaving Certificate gives direct entry only with the right mix of subjects. You need six subjects, with at least two at Higher Level at H5 or better and the rest at H6/O6 or better, and they must include two languages and Maths. For engineering you also need Higher Level Maths at H5 and a Higher Level science at H5. LCA and LCVP are not accepted. HSHL has uni-assist check your certificate, so confirm the result with uni-assist and HSHL admissions.
  • There is no entrance test or interview. Admission is unrestricted (no numerus clausus), so everyone who meets the entry requirements gets a place.
  • You need English at CEFR B2, for example IELTS 6.0 or TOEFL iBT 80. HSHL says a test is not needed if your school-leaving certificate documents your English. Leaving Cert English may therefore count, but email admission@hshl.de to confirm before booking a test.

How to apply

  1. Check your subjectsMake sure your Leaving Cert includes Higher Level Maths at H5 and a Higher Level science at H5, and meets the other German subject rules.
  2. Get a uni-assist evaluationSend your Leaving Cert results to uni-assist as soon as you have them, and allow several weeks for processing.
  3. Apply on Campus Office OnlineApply on HSHL’s portal during the application period (expected to run from December 2026 to summer 2027, so confirm the dates). Upload your uni-assist result and your proof of English.
  4. Enrol and pay the semester feeHSHL usually emails its decision within about 4 weeks of the deadline. Then enrol and pay the semester contribution (EUR 362.80 in 2026/27, which was due by 31 July 2026).
Deadline for Irish/EU applicants: Entry is in the winter semester only. The programme page says the application period runs from December to July before the winter semester starts. For winter 2026/27, however, the online registration page says applications closed on 9 September 2026. HSHL has not yet published dates for 2027 entry, so check the online registration page from December 2026. Leave time for the uni-assist evaluation, because you cannot complete your HSHL application until you upload its result..

Costs

  • No tuition fees, because HSHL is a public university. You pay only a semester contribution, which is EUR 362.80 per semester for winter 2026/27 (about EUR 725.60 a year). This includes the Deutschlandticket for public transport across Germany. HSHL lists no application fee, but uni-assist charges its own fee to evaluate your Leaving Cert, so check the current amount on uni-assist.
There is no tuition, only a semester fee of about EUR 363. However, you need Higher Level Maths and a Higher Level science at H5 or better to meet the German engineering entry rules, and you need a uni-assist evaluation before you can complete your application, so start early.
