About the course

An interdisciplinary social science degree taught entirely in English. It covers gender, social diversity, migration and globalisation, with training in research methods and practical skills for work in organisations. It runs over seven semesters and includes an 8-week work placement.

Entry requirements for Irish students

  • The Irish Leaving Certificate gives direct entry to German universities only with the right subject and level combination: six subjects, at least two at Higher Level with H5 or better, the other four at O6/H6 or better, including two languages and Maths at O5/H6 or better. As this is a social sciences course, Higher Level Maths at H5 is also likely to be needed. Rhine-Waal publishes nothing Ireland-specific, so confirm with admissions.
  • There is no numerus clausus, so eligible applicants are admitted without ranking. You need a mandatory 8-week preparatory internship or work placement, completed by the 4th semester enrolment deadline.
  • English at B2 level is required for English-taught programmes. The university’s list of accepted English proofs includes a secondary school diploma from Ireland, so Leaving Cert students do not normally need an English test.

How to apply

  1. Check your Leaving Cert subjectsConfirm your six subjects and levels meet the German rules, and plan for Higher Level Maths at H5 for social sciences.
  2. Apply through uni-assistCreate a uni-assist account and upload your Leaving Cert results and ID well before the 15 July deadline.
  3. Receive your admissionBecause the course has open admission, eligible applicants receive a place once their documents are checked.
  4. Enrol and plan your placementPay the semester contribution, enrol for the 1 September start, and plan the 8-week work placement due by the 4th semester.
Deadline for Irish/EU applicants: Winter semester intake only (studies start on 1 September). The German-language programme page gives a winter semester deadline of 15 July. Applicants with international school qualifications apply through uni-assist. The course is open admission (zulassungsfrei): if you meet the formal entry requirements, you are admitted. Date is from the 2026 cycle; confirm for 2027..

Costs

  • No tuition fees for EU students. You pay only a semester contribution, which is €365.10 for winter semester 2026/27 (including a Deutschlandticket), so about €730 a year. uni-assist charges its own application processing fee; check the current amount on uni-assist.de.
There is no numerus clausus and no tuition fee, but your Leaving Cert must still meet the German subject and level rules, which probably include Higher Level Maths for social sciences. If it does not, you will not be eligible.
