About the course

A three-year (180 ECTS) computer science degree taught fully in English at IU’s Cologne campus, combining core computer science with data cleaning and preparation, statistical methods, visualisation and big data technologies. It includes a mandatory internship, elective modules and a bachelor thesis.

Entry requirements for Irish students

  • Germany’s recognition rules (KMK/ZAB, anabin) say the Leaving Certificate gives direct university entry only for certain subject areas: you need six subjects, at least two at Higher Level at H5 or better and the other four at O6/H6 or better, including two languages and Maths at O5/H6 or better. Computer science is normally treated as a maths/science/engineering area, which also asks for Higher Level Maths at H5 plus a Higher Level science at H5. IU does not publish Irish-specific rules, so confirm with IU admissions how your Leaving Cert will be assessed. LCA is not accepted.
  • Every applicant has an admission interview as part of the process.
  • IU asks for proof of English skills, but the accepted tests, scores and any exemption for students schooled in Ireland are not shown on the programme page; ask admissions whether your Leaving Cert English is accepted.

How to apply

  1. Check your subjectsMake sure your Leaving Cert (six subjects, two languages, Maths, and ideally Higher Level Maths and a science at H5) meets the German rules; ask IU admissions to confirm.
  2. Apply onlineApply directly through IU’s online application for an April or October 2027 start; no application fee is listed.
  3. Admission interviewComplete IU’s admission interview and upload your certificates (in English or German) and any proof of English they ask for.
  4. Sign the contract and enrolAccept the study contract, choose a payment plan, pay the €1,500 registration fee and arrange housing in Cologne.
Deadline for Irish/EU applicants: Intakes are in October and April. The programme page currently says to apply by 5 October to get the tuition discount for the October 2026 start; no deadline for 2027 entry has been published. Apply several months ahead to leave time for the interview and enrolment..

Costs

  • IU is a private, state-recognised university, so tuition is charged. Paying yearly costs €6,831 a year (€20,492 total), which already includes discounts of 18% plus 2%; paying per semester is €3,485 a semester (€20,910 total), and paying in full up front is €18,819. The undiscounted list price is €25,500 for the whole degree. There is also a one-off campus registration fee of €1,500 and a semester ticket of €226.80 per semester. No application fee is listed. Discounts are promotional and can change.
IU is a private university, so you pay tuition of about €6,800 a year plus a €1,500 registration fee, unlike Germany’s public universities, which only charge a small semester fee. Compare it with tuition-free public options before committing.
