About the course

A three-year, 180 ECTS computer science degree taught 100% in English on IU’s Cologne campus, covering computer science theory and in-depth technical modules. It includes a compulsory internship, specialisation options in Applied AI or Data Science, and electives.

Entry requirements for Irish students

  • IU asks for a secondary school leaving certificate. Under German recognition rules (KMK/ZAB) the Leaving Certificate gives direct university entry only with six subjects, including two languages and Maths, with at least two at Higher Level H5 or better and the rest at O6/H6 or better; for maths, science and engineering areas this also means Higher Level Maths at H5 and a Higher Level science at H5. LCA and LCVP are not accepted. IU does not publish Leaving Cert-specific rules, so confirm with IU admissions how your results will be assessed.
  • The admission process includes an interview; no separate entrance exam is listed.
  • You must show English language skills. The course page does not list accepted tests or exemptions, so ask IU whether Leaving Certificate English or schooling in Ireland is accepted as proof.

How to apply

  1. Check your subjectsMake sure your Leaving Cert plan meets the German rules above, ideally with Higher Level Maths at H5 or better and a Higher Level science at H5 or better.
  2. Apply onlineSubmit the online application on iu.org for the October 2027 (or April) intake; check the current discount deadline and the 2027 dates with IU.
  3. Admission interviewComplete IU’s admission interview and provide proof of English as requested.
  4. Accept and enrolSign the study contract, choose a payment plan, pay the EUR 1,500 campus registration fee and arrange housing in Cologne before the start.
Deadline for Irish/EU applicants: IU admits students for October and April starts. The course page currently shows 5 October as the date to apply for the upcoming (2026) intake to get a tuition discount; this appears to be a discount deadline rather than a fixed closing date. Dates for October 2027 have not been published, so confirm with IU and apply early to allow time for the admission interview, paperwork and finding accommodation in Cologne..

Costs

  • IU is a private, state-recognised university, so you pay tuition. The listed price is EUR 6,831 a year if you pay yearly (this includes an 18% programme discount plus an extra 2% for yearly payment; EUR 20,492 in total). Paying each semester costs EUR 3,485 per semester (EUR 20,910 in total); paying everything up front costs EUR 18,819. On top of tuition there is a one-off campus registration fee of EUR 1,500 and a semester ticket of EUR 226.80 per semester. Discounts are set by IU, are tied to application dates and can change.
This is a private university: expect about EUR 6,831 a year in tuition (with IU’s current discounts) plus a EUR 1,500 registration fee and Cologne living costs, unlike Germany’s tuition-free public universities. Check the discount terms and payment plan carefully before signing.
