About the course

A 6-semester, 180 ECTS degree taught in English (with additional language courses) that combines business management basics with the structures and working methods of the creative industries. It includes company projects, a practical semester and an integrated semester abroad. You choose a profile: Digital Innovation, Cultural Management and Strategic Communication are taught in Karlsruhe; Motion Design, Film and Digital Media Creation are taught in Potsdam. Check which profiles run for 2027.

Entry requirements for Irish students

  • Karlshochschule asks for a higher education entrance qualification (Abitur or equivalent) and publishes nothing specific on the Irish Leaving Certificate, so the general German rules for Irish applicants are likely to apply: six subjects, at least two at Higher Level with H5 or better, the others at H6/O6 or better, including two languages and Maths. LCA and LCVP are generally not accepted. Confirm with admissions.
  • Selection is based on your written application (school certificate, motivation letter in English of 1-2 pages, tabular CV, photo and any internship, volunteering or time-abroad documents) followed by a personal interview with professors and admissions staff. The university says you get a decision within a few days, with feedback.
  • English at B2 must be proven with IELTS (5.5 minimum), TOEFL (72 minimum) or Trinity ISE III. The university lists no exemption for Leaving Cert English, so ask admissions whether it will be accepted.

How to apply

  1. Pick your profile and campusDecide between the Karlsruhe profiles (Digital Innovation, Cultural Management, Strategic Communication) and the Potsdam profiles (Motion Design, Film, Digital Media Creation), and check which run for 2027.
  2. Check subjects and EnglishConfirm with admissions that your Leaving Cert subjects are accepted, and arrange IELTS (5.5) or TOEFL (72) unless admissions accepts Leaving Cert English.
  3. Apply onlineSubmit the online application with your results so far, a 1-2 page motivation letter in English, a tabular CV and photo before 1 September (confirm the 2027 date).
  4. Interview and contractAttend the selection interview; if admitted, your place is held for two weeks while you sign the study contract, then pay the EUR 500 enrolment fee. Classes start at the end of September.
Deadline for Irish/EU applicants: EU applicants: 1 September for the course starting at the end of September (the university says possibly later). Non-EU applicants: 15 July. The published deadline carries no year, so confirm the 2027 date with admissions..

Costs

  • Private, state-recognised university. EU students pay EUR 550 a month (EUR 6,600 a year), plus a one-off enrolment fee of EUR 500 paid after signing the study contract and a semester contribution (the university lists EUR 67.70 a semester at the 2024 rate). The university puts the total for the 3-year degree at EUR 20,706.20 for EU students. No application fee is listed. Confirm all figures for 2027 entry.
Your campus depends on the profile you choose: Motion Design, Film and Digital Media Creation are in Potsdam, the others in Karlsruhe. It is a private university charging EUR 550 a month (about EUR 20,700 for the full degree).
