About the course

A three-year, English-taught bachelor’s degree in data science on KU’s Ingolstadt campus. You study mathematics, statistics, computer science and data science, including the basics of machine learning and current methods for analysing data. You then choose one of six specialisations: Applied Mathematics and Scientific Computing, Business Analytics and Operations, Digital Transformation of Society, Environmental Sciences, Finance and Economics, or Machine Learning and Statistics. Teaching is in English. You do not need German to apply, but you must reach German level A2 by the end of your second semester. KU’s Language Center offers free German courses.

Entry requirements for Irish students

  • Germany’s recognition rules (KMK/ZAB, published on anabin) say the Leaving Certificate gives direct university entry only if you have the right subjects at the right levels. You need six subjects: at least two at Higher Level with H5 or better, and the other four at H6/O6 or better. The six must include two languages and Maths at O5/H6 or better. LCA and LCVP are not accepted. KU publishes no Irish-specific guidance, so confirm with KU admissions.
  • Data science is likely to fall under the maths and science subject area. For that area, German rules also ask for Higher Level Maths at H5 or better plus a Higher Level science subject at H5 or better. Do not take Ordinary Level Maths if you want this course.
  • The course has no numerus clausus. KU’s aptitude assessment (which needs an overall grade of 2.0 or better) applies only to non-EU citizens who also got their school qualification outside the EU. An Irish or other EU citizen with a Leaving Cert should not need it.
  • KU asks for proof of English, for example TOEFL 78 or IELTS 5.5. It does not say whether Leaving Cert English counts as proof, so ask KU admissions before you book a test.

How to apply

  1. Check your subjectsBefore you choose your Leaving Cert levels, make sure you will have six subjects that meet the German rules. For data science, plan on Higher Level Maths at H5 and a Higher Level science at H5.
  2. Sort out proof of EnglishAsk KU whether Leaving Cert English is enough. If it is not, take TOEFL (78 or more) or IELTS (5.5 or more) in time for the deadline.
  3. Apply on the KU portalApply through KU’s application portal (studienservice.ku.de) within the application window. In 2026 that was 1 April to 15 July. Upload your Leaving Cert results, proof of English and your passport.
  4. Enrol and learn GermanOnce you get an offer, enrol and pay the €88 semester fee. Look for housing in Ingolstadt early. Then use KU’s free German courses to reach level A2 by the end of your second semester.
Deadline for Irish/EU applicants: For winter 2026/27, applicants with school-leaving qualifications from outside Germany applied through the KU application portal between 1 April and 15 July 2026. KU has not yet published its 2027 dates. If they follow the same pattern, expect 1 April to 15 July 2027. Check the programme page before you apply..

Costs

  • KU charges no tuition for this course. You pay only a semester fee of €88 each semester (the figure KU gives for 2026/27). Check the amount for 2027/28 before you budget.
Teaching is in English, but you must reach German level A2 by the end of your second semester (KU offers free courses). Germany’s maths and science rules probably apply here, so plan on Higher Level Maths and a Higher Level science, each at H5 or better. CAO points alone are not enough.
