About the course

A four-year (8-semester, 240 ECTS), English-taught honours bachelor’s degree in physics covering experimental and theoretical physics and the maths behind them, ending with a bachelor’s thesis. Leipzig also lists a separate three-year version of the International Physics Studies Program, so make sure you apply for the one you want.

Entry requirements for Irish students

  • Germany’s recognition rules (KMK/ZAB) give Leaving Cert holders direct university entry only with the right subject mix. You need six subjects, at least two at Higher Level H5 or better and the other four at O6/H6 or better, including two languages and Maths at O5/H6 or better. For a science course like physics you also need Higher Level Maths at H5 or better and a Higher Level science subject at H5 or better. LCA and LCVP are not accepted. Leipzig publishes nothing specific to Ireland, and uni-assist will check your certificate, so confirm with them.
  • Leipzig lists the programme without admission restriction, so there is no cap on places and no entrance test or interview.
  • You need English at CEFR level B2. Leipzig’s pages do not say whether Leaving Cert English counts as proof, so ask before you rely on it.

How to apply

  1. Check your subjectsMake sure your Leaving Cert will meet the general six-subject rule and include Higher Level Maths at H5 or better and a Higher Level science (ideally Physics) at H5 or better.
  2. Apply through uni-assistFrom early April 2027, create a uni-assist account and apply to Leipzig for the Honours programme, uploading your passport, proof of English at B2 and your school results. Pay the uni-assist fee.
  3. Send final resultsUpload your Leaving Cert results as soon as they are issued in August, and before the 1 September deadline.
  4. Enrol and find housingAccept your offer, pay the semester contribution and enrol before the October start. Look for accommodation in Leipzig early.
Deadline for Irish/EU applicants: Leipzig says that applicants with a school certificate from outside Germany apply through the uni-assist portal. For bachelor’s programmes without admission restriction, uni-assist applications for the winter semester run from the beginning of April to 1 September. The programme page also lists an AlmaWeb window of 2 May to 15 September, but that is for applicants with German qualifications. The course starts in the winter semester, in October. These are the current-cycle dates, so check them for 2027 and apply well before 1 September, because uni-assist processing takes time..

Costs

  • Leipzig University is a public university, so EU students pay no tuition. You pay only a semester contribution each semester, which in Germany usually includes the Deutschlandsemesterticket for public transport. Leipzig’s exact amount could not be checked, so look up the current figure before you budget.
There is no tuition fee and no cap on places, but under German rules your Leaving Cert only qualifies you for this physics degree if you have Higher Level Maths and a Higher Level science at H5 or better. Apply through uni-assist by 1 September. That leaves little time after Leaving Cert results come out, so start the application in spring. Leipzig runs both a 3-year and a 4-year (Honours) version of this programme.
