About the course

An English-taught major that studies culture, art and society, including cultural sociology, art theory, organisation and cultural management. Students begin with the interdisciplinary Leuphana Semester, then combine the major with a minor and Complementary Studies. A semester abroad is recommended in year two. (Leuphana also runs a separate German-language Cultural Studies major; make sure you apply for the English one.)

Entry requirements for Irish students

  • Germany’s recognition rules (KMK/ZAB) give Leaving Cert holders direct university entry only with the right combination: six subjects including two languages and Maths (O5/H6 or better), at least two at Higher Level with H5 or better and the other four at O6/H6 or better. Humanities and arts courses need nothing extra; confirm with Leuphana admissions whether this course is treated as humanities or social sciences (which would also need Higher Level Maths at H5).
  • Admission is restricted and uses Leuphana’s own procedure: your school-leaving grade (up to 30 points), the compulsory study skills test (up to 24 extra points) and extracurricular achievements are combined into a ranking list. Check the current rules on Leuphana’s admission pages.
  • English: Leuphana accepts a certificate from an English-speaking school that entitles you to study in that country, so the Leaving Cert should normally count; otherwise IELTS Academic 6.5, TOEFL 90 or Cambridge B2 First 175 (or equivalent). Confirm with admissions. No German required for the major.
