About the course

A three-year psychology major covering core and applied areas of psychology, with strong training in empirical research methods. It is combined with the Leuphana Semester, complementary studies and a minor; the Psychology major combined with the Psychology & Society minor holds the German Society for Psychology (DGPs) quality seal.

Entry requirements for Irish students

  • German rules (KMK/ZAB) say the Leaving Certificate gives direct university entry only with the right subject mix: six subjects, at least two at Higher Level with H5 or better, the other four at O6/H6 or better, including two languages and Maths at O5/H6 or better. Some subject areas need extra Higher Level subjects (for example Higher Level Maths at H5 for the social sciences), so confirm with Leuphana admissions which rule applies to Psychology.
  • Places are limited and awarded through Leuphana’s own admissions procedure. It considers your grades together with talents, experience and achievements such as time spent studying abroad or volunteer service.
  • The course is taught in English and no German is needed. The programme page says you need English skills but does not say which certificates or levels are accepted, or whether Leaving Cert English counts. Check with admissions.

How to apply

  1. Check your subjectsConfirm your Leaving Cert subject mix meets the German rules. Taking Higher Level Maths is the safer choice.
  2. Apply onlineApply through Leuphana’s online application between mid-May and 15 July 2027 (dates based on the current cycle). Include evidence of volunteering, time abroad or other achievements.
  3. SelectionLeuphana ranks applicants on their grades together with other achievements. Watch for any further steps it asks you to complete after you apply.
  4. Accept and enrolAccept your offer, pay the semester contribution of about €453 and arrange housing in Lüneburg before the October start.
Deadline for Irish/EU applicants: The programme page gives an application period of mid-May to 15 July for the October (winter semester) start. These are the dates for the current cycle; Leuphana has not yet published the 2027 dates, so check in spring 2027..

Costs

  • No tuition fees. You pay only the semester contribution of €452.92 per semester (about €906 a year), as listed on the programme page. The page does not mention an application fee.
Leuphana says this degree does not qualify you for master’s programmes in psychotherapy or clinical psychology, or for training towards the psychotherapy licensing exam. It is therefore not a route to becoming a clinical psychologist in Germany.
