About the course

A six-semester (180 ECTS) practical film degree taught in English in Berlin. It covers screenwriting, directing, cinematography, editing, sound design and lighting, and the fifth semester is an internship semester (25 ECTS) with film, TV and media companies. There is no numerus clausus and no entrance exam.

Entry requirements for Irish students

  • Macromedia requires a school leaving certificate that gives university entrance in Germany, and foreign certificates must be officially confirmed as equivalent where necessary. Under German rules (KMK/ZAB), the Leaving Certificate gives direct entry to arts subjects if you have six general subjects. These must include two languages and Maths at O5/H6 or better. At least two must be at Higher Level with H5 or better, and the other four at O6/H6 or better. LCA and LCVP are not accepted. Macromedia publishes nothing specific on the Leaving Cert, so confirm with admissions.
  • Application documents: school leaving certificate, CV, letter of motivation, passport/ID copy and proof of English. The course admission page lists no portfolio, but ask admissions whether any creative work samples are expected.
  • English: Macromedia’s admission page lists TOEFL iBT 72, IELTS 6.0 or Burlington VTest. It does not say whether Leaving Cert English or English-medium schooling exempts Irish applicants, so check before booking a test.
