About the course

A six-semester (180 ECTS), English-taught design degree (B.A. in Design, specialisation Interior Design – Space Concepts), offered in Berlin and Munich. It covers spatial design, scenography and installations, and 3D visualisation. The degree is state-recognised and accredited.

Entry requirements for Irish students

  • Macromedia asks for a recognised school leaving certificate, and certificates from outside Bavaria must be officially confirmed as equivalent where necessary. Under German rules (KMK/anabin), the Leaving Certificate gives direct entry if you have six general subjects. These must include two languages and Maths at O5/H6 or better. At least two must be at Higher Level with H5 or better, and the rest at O6/H6 or better. LCA and LCVP are not accepted. Macromedia publishes nothing specific on the Leaving Cert, so confirm with admissions.
  • Portfolio: a digital portfolio of 10 to 25 design or concept-based pieces, such as drawings, sketches, photos, animations or computer graphics. The work should be no more than two years old. Send it as a single PDF of up to 20 MB, or as a video via a download link. You also need a CV, a motivation letter and a copy of your passport or ID.
  • English: applicants who were not schooled in English need TOEFL iBT 72 or IELTS 6.0 or equivalent. Irish students taught through English should normally be exempt, but confirm this with admissions.

How to apply

  1. Build a digital portfolioIn fifth and sixth year, gather 10 to 25 recent drawings, models, spatial or 3D pieces, photos or other design work into one PDF.
  2. Check your subjects and EnglishMake sure your Leaving Cert meets the German six-subject rule, and confirm with admissions that your English-medium schooling exempts you from a language test.
  3. Apply onlineSubmit the Macromedia online application with your portfolio, CV, motivation letter, ID and results well before the deadline, which is about 30 September 2027 for the October 2027 intake.
  4. Enrol and payChoose Berlin or Munich, sign the study contract, pay the €699 registration fee and your first tuition instalment, and arrange accommodation before the 1 October start.
Deadline for Irish/EU applicants: Two intakes a year: summer semester (starting 1 April) and winter semester (starting 1 October). For the October 2026 intake, the programme’s fees page says to apply by 30 September 2026. The general admissions page gives 1 October and says deadlines can be extended in exceptional cases. 2027 dates are not yet published, so expect about 30 September 2027 for an October 2027 start, and apply early..

Costs

  • From €6,000 per semester (€12,000 a year) plus a one-off €699 registration fee, as listed on the official programme pages for the 2026 intakes. Everyone pays the same fee, whether from the EU or not. Macromedia is a private, state-recognised university and offers payment plans and scholarships. 2027 fees are not yet published.
Macromedia states that this programme does not currently qualify you for admission to a German Chamber of Architects. You need that admission to use the protected title of interior designer (Innenarchitekt) in Germany. It is also a private university costing €12,000 a year plus a €699 registration fee.
