About the course

A 7-semester engineering degree taught in English on autonomous vehicle technology, including sensors, software, vehicle systems and automated driving. The 5th semester is a mandatory internship (24 ECTS) in Germany or abroad.

Entry requirements for Irish students

  • Germany’s recognition rules (KMK/anabin) say the Leaving Cert gives direct entry to an engineering degree only with the right subjects: six subjects including two languages and Maths (O5/H6 or better); at least two at Higher Level H5 or better, the rest at O6/H6 or better; and for engineering, Higher Level Maths at H5 or better plus a Higher Level science at H5 or better. LCA and LCVP are not accepted. THI publishes nothing specific on Irish applicants, so confirm with admissions.
  • THI runs an aptitude assessment: your school grades, especially Maths and your best science or computer science subjects, are converted into points as a weighted average. Applicants with 70 points or more are invited to a short online selection interview, and a pass in the interview leads to admission.
  • English: THI says that if your secondary school taught through English, no additional proof of English is needed, so an Irish school-leaver should not need IELTS or TOEFL. German is not required, but THI encourages students to learn it to help find an internship.

How to apply

  1. Check your Leaving Cert subjectsMake sure you have Higher Level Maths at H5 or better and a Higher Level science at H5 or better, plus the rest of the German subject rules.
  2. Get a VPD from uni-assistUpload your documents to uni-assist so you have your VPD by 30 May 2027; allow 4 to 6 weeks. Leaving Cert results come out in August, so ask THI how to apply before your final results.
  3. Apply on PRIMUSSSubmit your application on THI’s PRIMUSS portal by 15 July 2027 (the programme page gives 1 April to 15 July 2027 for winter 2027/28), with your VPD.
  4. Online interview and enrolmentWith 70 points or more you are invited to a short online interview (mid-June to end of July in 2026). Once admitted, enrol and pay the semester contribution.
Deadline for Irish/EU applicants: Two steps. First get your VPD from uni-assist by 30 May at the latest (processing takes 4 to 6 weeks). Then apply on THI’s PRIMUSS portal: the programme page gives the winter semester 2027/28 application period as 1 April to 15 July 2027, and the PRIMUSS step as 2 May to 15 July. In the 2026 cycle, selection interviews ran from mid-June to the end of July..

Costs

  • No tuition for Irish/EU students: THI says study is free of charge for EU citizens apart from a semester fee to the Erlangen-Nuremberg Student Services Association. THI’s April 2026 cost sheet lists this at €82 per semester (about €164 a year); some programme pages still show €67. The €800 per semester tuition applies only to non-EU/EEA students. uni-assist charges €75 for the VPD check (€30 for each further university).
The uni-assist VPD deadline (30 May) is well before the 15 July portal deadline, and Leaving Cert results come out in August, so contact THI early about applying on earlier results. The 5th semester is a company internship, where some German helps.
