About the course

A 7-semester engineering degree taught entirely in English on energy systems and renewable energy technologies. An 8-week preparatory internship must be completed during semester breaks before the start of the 4th semester.

Entry requirements for Irish students

  • Germany’s recognition rules (KMK/anabin) say the Leaving Cert gives direct entry to an engineering degree only with the right subjects: six subjects including two languages and Maths (O5/H6 or better); at least two at Higher Level H5 or better, the rest at O6/H6 or better; and for engineering, Higher Level Maths at H5 or better plus a Higher Level science at H5 or better. LCA and LCVP are not accepted. THI publishes nothing specific on Irish applicants, so confirm with admissions.
  • THI describes this as an admission-free bachelor’s course (no selection), so if you meet the entry rules you should get a place. You must complete an 8-week preparatory internship before the 4th semester.
  • English: THI asks applicants without a German entrance qualification for B2-level English proof; confirm with THI that your Leaving Cert English is accepted. German is not needed for admission, but THI says most employers expect at least A2.

How to apply

  1. Check your Leaving Cert subjectsMake sure you have Higher Level Maths at H5 or better and a Higher Level science at H5 or better, plus the rest of the German subject rules.
  2. Get a VPD from uni-assistSend your documents to uni-assist early; allow 4 to 6 weeks for the VPD.
  3. Apply on PRIMUSSApply on THI’s portal by 15 July 2027 (period for 2027/28 given as 1 April to 15 July 2027) with your VPD.
  4. Enrol and plan your internshipEnrol, pay the semester contribution, and plan the 8-week preparatory internship for semester breaks before the 4th semester.
Deadline for Irish/EU applicants: Get your VPD from uni-assist first (4 to 6 weeks), then apply on THI’s PRIMUSS portal. The programme page gives the winter semester 2027/28 application period as 1 April to 15 July 2027 (it also mentions 2 May to 15 July). Winter start only..

Costs

  • No tuition for Irish/EU students: you pay only the semester fee to the Erlangen-Nuremberg Student Services Association, listed by THI at €82 per semester (about €164 a year) in its April 2026 cost sheet. The €800 per semester tuition applies only to non-EU/EEA students. uni-assist charges €75 for the VPD check (€30 for each further university).
There is no selection, but you must still meet Germany’s Leaving Cert subject rules, including Higher Level Maths and a Higher Level science at H5. Start learning German early, as THI says most employers expect at least A2.
