About the course

A seven-semester industrial engineering degree (Wirtschaftsingenieurwesen) on the Ledward campus in Schweinfurt. Maths, physics and mechanics give you the technical base, and business administration, accounting and economics give you the business side. Semester 6 is an internship semester, which you can do abroad. The course is taught in English and in German (a ‘TWIN’ programme). You can take the English version, or mix German and English modules to earn a TWIN certificate.

Entry requirements for Irish students

  • Under Germany’s rules (KMK/ZAB), the Leaving Certificate gives direct university entry only with the right subjects and levels, usually six subjects with at least two at Higher Level. This is an engineering degree (B.Eng.), so strong Higher Level Maths, plus a science such as Physics, is the safest preparation. Uni-assist checks your eligibility for THWS through a VPD. Confirm the exact subject and grade rules with uni-assist or THWS admissions.
  • No entrance test is listed for this course, and THWS lists no admission restriction. If you take the English version, you must reach German at A2 level by the end of your second semester.
  • English at B2 is required. THWS accepts TOEFL iBT (83), IELTS (6.0), Cambridge B2 First (grade C) or C1 Advanced, and UNIcert level II. Native speakers, and applicants whose school-leaving qualification was obtained in English, are exempt; the second group needs a certificate from their school.

How to apply

  1. Check your subjectsPlan for strong Higher Level Maths and ideally a Higher Level science such as Physics, then confirm the Leaving Cert rules with uni-assist.
  2. Apply for a uni-assist VPDRequest it early in 2027 (you can apply at any time of year). It costs €75 and takes at least 4 to 6 weeks.
  3. Apply on the THWS CampusPortalApply between 1 April and 15 June 2027 for the English version of Business and Engineering. Upload your VPD and proof of English (or a school letter confirming you were taught in English), and upload your Leaving Cert results when they arrive.
  4. Enrol and startClasses start on 1 October 2027 in Schweinfurt. Pay the €117.70 semester fee and reach German A2 by the end of semester 2.
Deadline for Irish/EU applicants: THWS takes applications for its English-taught bachelor programmes every year from 1 April to 15 June for the winter semester, which starts on 1 October. For 2027 entry, that means 1 April to 15 June 2027. A uni-assist VPD takes at least 4 to 6 weeks, and you can request it at any time of year, so apply for it early. Leaving Cert results come out in August, after the deadline. THWS says that for courses without admission restrictions, you can generally upload documents after the deadline. Confirm with THWS how to send your results..

Costs

  • No tuition fees. You pay only the student services fee (Studierendenwerk contribution), currently €117.70 per semester, or about €235 a year. The amount can change each year. Applicants with a school certificate from outside Germany also need a uni-assist VPD (pre-evaluation), which costs €75 for your first choice of course.
This is an engineering degree with business subjects, not a business degree, so strong Higher Level Maths (and ideally Physics) matters. Applications close on 15 June, before Leaving Cert results, but THWS generally lets you upload documents after the deadline for courses without admission restrictions.

Checked September 2026 for 2027 entry. THWS says the application period runs every year from 1 April to 15 June, and that it decides each semester, usually not before April, which courses have admission restrictions. Recheck both in April 2027. Always confirm details with the university before applying.
