About the course

A six-semester (180 ECTS) design degree taught in English at UE’s Innovation Hub in Potsdam. It covers user experience and interface design, including user research and usability. In the fifth semester you can do an internship or study abroad.

Entry requirements for Irish students

  • UE asks for a general higher education entrance qualification. Under German rules the Leaving Certificate counts only with the right subject mix: six subjects, at least two at Higher Level H5 or better, the other four at O6/H6 or better, including two languages and Maths at O5/H6 or better. Art and design courses need nothing extra. LCA and LCVP are not accepted. UE publishes nothing specific to Ireland, so confirm with admissions.
  • Portfolio: UE’s bachelor application guide says Art & Design applicants are assessed on a portfolio, with requirements varying by programme. The programme page lists an admissions test for non-EU applicants only. Prepare a portfolio and ask admissions exactly what is needed from you.
  • English: UE accepts, for example, IELTS Academic 5.5, TOEFL iBT 60, Cambridge C1 Advanced 162 or Duolingo 100 (or an EFSET test taken at UE if you finished school within the last two years). No exemption for Leaving Cert English is listed, so ask admissions.

How to apply

  1. Check your Leaving Cert subjectsMake sure your six subjects meet the German rule: two at Higher Level H5 or better, two languages, and Maths at O5/H6 or better.
  2. Prepare documents and portfolioYou will need a CV, a copy of your passport or ID, your Leaving Cert results, a motivation letter of at least 500 words, proof of English and a design portfolio. UE says Art & Design applicants need official translations of their transcripts.
  3. Apply on UE’s online portalApply by 1 September 2027 for a September 2027 start, or by 28 February for a March start. After the deadline you go on a waiting list.
  4. Accept and pay the reservation feeIf you get an offer, pay the €1,500 reservation fee, sign the study contract and arrange housing in Potsdam or Berlin.
Deadline for Irish/EU applicants: UE’s standing deadlines are 1 September for the winter semester (September start) and 28 February for the summer semester (March start). After these dates a waiting-list procedure applies for any remaining places. These are UE’s general deadlines, not a dated 2027 announcement, so confirm before applying..

Costs

  • Private university. The programme page lists tuition ‘from €6,662 per year’, marked ‘T&C’s apply. Current saving offer’, so the full undiscounted fee is not published. UE says tuition includes the enrolment, examination and thesis fees. EU applicants (except residents of Germany, Austria and Switzerland) pay a €1,500 reservation fee after acceptance, which UE says is deducted from the total programme cost. No application fee is listed. Budget separately for rent and transport.
UE is a private university, so you pay tuition (advertised from €6,662 a year on a current saving offer). Public German universities charge no tuition. Get the full fee and contract terms in writing before you pay the reservation fee.
