About the course

An English-taught engineering degree (BSc, 180 ECTS) at Aalborg University’s Esbjerg campus, focused on electronics used in industry. AAU describes it as an English-language programme in an international environment. AAU is known for problem-based learning in project groups. Until 2026 every qualified applicant was admitted. From 2027 the number of places is limited, so meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee a place.

Entry requirements for Irish students

  • Danish universities accept the Irish Leaving Certificate as an EU school-leaving qualification. AAU converts foreign grades using the Danish Ministry of Higher Education and Science guidelines. It looks at teaching hours and at the syllabus covered in the last three years of school. AAU does not publish how Leaving Cert subjects and levels map to Danish A, B or C levels, and it does not pre-assess applications. Do not assume Ordinary Level will count, and confirm with AAU admissions.
  • This programme requires Mathematics at Danish level A with a minimum grade of 4.0 (Danish scale), plus Physics B or Geoscience A. Leaving Cert students should expect to need Higher Level Maths and Physics. Check with AAU which Leaving Cert levels and grades it accepts.
  • English is required at Danish level B (CEFR B2). AAU exempts only Danish, Nordic, German, IB and European Baccalaureate qualifications from a test. The Leaving Cert is not on that list, so you may need IELTS 6.5 (at least 6.0 in each section), TOEFL 85 (at least 20 in each section) or Cambridge C1 Advanced at grade C. Tests must be less than 2 years old at the deadline. Ask AAU whether Leaving Cert English is accepted instead.

How to apply

  1. Check the subject requirementsRead AAU’s programme page. It asks for Maths A (grade 4.0 or higher), Physics B or Geoscience A, and English B. Email AAU admissions to ask how your Leaving Cert Higher Level subjects count and whether you need an English test.
  2. Apply on optagelse.dkApplications usually open on 1 February. Create an application on optagelse.dk and add this programme to your list of priorities. The expected deadline is 15 March 2027 at 12:00 noon Danish time.
  3. Upload your documentsUpload your school results so far, the verification forms and syllabus descriptions AAU asks for, and an English test result if one is needed, all by 15 March. AAU’s deadline for EU diplomas is 5 July, so ask AAU how to send final Leaving Cert results issued in August.
  4. Accept your offer and find housingPlaces are limited from 2027. If you get an offer, accept it on time and start looking for housing in Esbjerg early. Register with the Danish authorities when you arrive.
Deadline for Irish/EU applicants: AAU’s deadline for applicants with a foreign school-leaving exam is 15 March at 12:00 noon Danish time. You apply on optagelse.dk, and applications usually open on 1 February. All supporting documents are due by the same deadline. AAU says EU/EEA applicants must upload their final diploma by 5 July at 12:00 noon. Leaving Cert results come out in late August, so ask AAU admissions (bacheloroptag@aau.dk) how it handles Irish results that arrive after that date. AAU publishes these dates each year, so confirm the 2027 dates on AAU’s site and on optagelse.dk..

Costs

  • Aalborg University is a public Danish university. AAU’s programme page says that students from outside the EU/EEA pay application and tuition fees. EU/EEA citizens, including Irish citizens, pay no tuition under Danish rules. Applying through optagelse.dk is free. AAU does not publish a separate figure for EU students, so confirm with AAU that nothing has changed for 2027/28.
You apply through optagelse.dk by 15 March, before your Leaving Cert results are out. The programme needs Maths at Danish level A and Physics at level B, and from 2027 places are limited. Check early with AAU how Leaving Cert grades count, whether you need an English test, and how late results are handled. Tuition is free for EU citizens, but the Danish SU grant is not automatic and housing can be hard to find.
