About the course

A three-year (180 ECTS), English-taught social science degree. The first year is a broad interdisciplinary base; in years two and three you specialise in one or two bachelor subjects, such as International Studies or Business Studies. About half of your study time is project work, following Roskilde’s problem-based learning model.

Entry requirements for Irish students

  • Denmark accepts the Irish Leaving Certificate as an EU school-leaving qualification. Roskilde University has no Ireland-specific page. It compares each subject with Danish A/B/C levels by counting the hours of teaching in your last three years of upper secondary school (for example, 210 hours for English at Danish B level), and your school must fill in, stamp and sign a verification form showing these hours. How Higher and Ordinary Level map to Danish levels is not published, so confirm with Roskilde admissions.
  • Specific requirements: English at Danish B level, Mathematics at Danish B level, and History, Social Science, Contemporary History or History of Ideas at Danish B level. You also need a grade average of 6.0 on the Danish 7-point scale, or 4.0 in English and Mathematics. In 2026, applicants who met the requirements and had a GPA of 9.0 or higher on the Danish scale were guaranteed a place.
  • English: Roskilde does not accept English tests (such as IELTS or TOEFL) to meet the English B requirement. It must be shown through your school qualification, which for Irish students means Leaving Cert English with enough teaching hours. Confirm this with admissions.

How to apply

  1. Check subject levels (autumn 2026)Email Roskilde admissions to ask whether your Leaving Cert English, Maths and History (or a similar subject) will count as Danish B level. Ask your school early to complete the hours-of-instruction verification form.
  2. Apply on optagelse.dk (by 15 Mar 2027, 12:00 noon)Submit your application listing up to 8 choices in order of priority, with your predicted or expected results and the stamped verification form.
  3. Submit final results (Aug 2027)Send your final Leaving Cert results to Roskilde as soon as they are released, following the instructions admissions gives you.
  4. Offer and move (summer 2027)Accept your place when offered, find housing early because the Copenhagen region is expensive, and register with the Danish authorities when you arrive. Teaching starts in late summer.
Deadline for Irish/EU applicants: Apply through optagelse.dk by 15 March 2027 at 12:00 noon Danish time (the national deadline for both quota 1 and quota 2, per Study in Denmark). Study in Denmark says applicants finishing school in June can attach their diploma by 5 July at 12:00 noon, but Leaving Cert results come out in late August, so ask Roskilde admissions how and when to submit your final results. Roskilde’s own deadline page could not be checked, so confirm the dates there..

Costs

  • No tuition fees for EU/EEA citizens, including Irish citizens. Roskilde University states that only non-EU/EEA citizens must pay an application fee and tuition fees. You will need money for rent and living costs in the Copenhagen region.
Maths and History (or a similar subject) must count as Danish B level, and Roskilde does not accept English tests. Check with admissions before 15 March that your Leaving Cert subjects meet the requirements and how late Leaving Cert results are handled.
