About the course

A practice-oriented Bachelor of Engineering (diplomingeniør) in mechatronics, taught in English in Sønderborg. It includes a compulsory paid internship in the sixth semester, usually with local companies.

Entry requirements for Irish students

  • SDU accepts the Leaving Certificate (Established) for its Bachelor of Engineering programmes and assesses Irish applicants on grades only, but always recommends also taking uniTEST because grade thresholds can change. You need your Leaving Certificate, grade transcripts for the last three years and SDU’s Statement of Hours form. The LCVP (with English at Danish B level and maths at Danish C level) and QQI/FETAC Level 5 and 6 certificates can also qualify for engineering programmes, but uniTEST is then compulsory, and a QQI certificate must fit the programme. SDU does not publish how Higher and Ordinary Level map to Danish levels, so confirm this with SDU Admissions.
  • Programme-specific subject requirements at Danish levels (A, B or C) are listed on the programme’s entry requirements page and could not be confirmed here. As an engineering degree it is likely to require a high level of maths and science, so plan on Higher Level Maths and check with SDU.
  • English at Danish B level is required: a pass in English equivalent to at least 2.0 on the Danish 7-point scale, plus a signed and stamped school Statement of Hours. IELTS, TOEFL and Duolingo are not accepted. Cambridge C1 Advanced (180 or higher) is accepted only if you already studied English at school.

How to apply

  1. Check subject levelsCheck the SDU BEng Mechatronics entry requirements page for the Danish subject levels needed, and ask SDU Admissions which Higher Level grades count as equivalent.
  2. Prepare documentsAsk your school to complete SDU’s Statement of Hours form and collect grade transcripts for the last three years. Consider taking uniTEST, which SDU recommends.
  3. Apply on optagelse.dkApply by 15 March 2027 at 12:00 noon Danish time, ranking the BEng among up to 8 choices.
  4. Results, housing and internshipUpload your final Leaving Cert results in late August, accept your offer, arrange housing in Sønderborg, and note that semester 6 is a paid internship in industry.
Deadline for Irish/EU applicants: Applicants with a foreign exam such as the Leaving Certificate apply on optagelse.dk by 15 March at 12:00 noon Danish time (the date SDU publishes for the current cycle; confirm the 2027 date). Final Leaving Cert results are uploaded later when SDU asks for them..

Costs

  • No tuition fees for full-degree students from EU/EEA countries and Switzerland, so Irish citizens pay nothing. Non-EU/EEA students pay EUR 17,300 per year, paid a full year in advance.
This is the more applied 3.5-year engineering route, with a paid industry internship and only around 40 places. It is taught in Sønderborg, so plan early for housing.
