About the course

A three-year engineering degree in mechatronics, combining mechanical, electronic and software engineering to design and control intelligent machines and robots, taught in English in Sønderborg. Graduates can continue to a two-year master’s programme.

Entry requirements for Irish students

  • SDU accepts the Leaving Certificate (Established) for its bachelor programmes and assesses Irish applicants on grades only, but always recommends also sitting its admission test (uniTEST) because grade thresholds can change from year to year. You need your Leaving Certificate, grade transcripts for the last three years and SDU’s Statement of Hours form. The Leaving Certificate Vocational Programme qualifies only if English (Danish B level) and maths (Danish C level) are included, and then uniTEST is compulsory. SDU does not publish how Higher and Ordinary Level map to Danish A, B and C levels, so confirm this with SDU Admissions.
  • Programme-specific subject requirements at Danish levels (A, B or C) are listed on the programme’s entry requirements page and could not be confirmed here. As an engineering degree it is likely to require a high level of maths and science, so plan on Higher Level Maths and check the exact requirements with SDU before applying.
  • English at Danish B level is required for all SDU bachelor programmes: a pass in English equivalent to at least 2.0 on the Danish 7-point scale, backed by a signed and stamped Statement of Hours from your school. IELTS, TOEFL and Duolingo are not accepted. Cambridge C1 Advanced (180 or higher) can be used only if you already studied English at school.

How to apply

  1. Check subject levelsBefore choosing Leaving Cert subjects, check the SDU Mechatronics entry requirements page for the Danish subject levels needed (maths, science, English) and ask SDU Admissions which Higher Level grades count as equivalent.
  2. Gather documentsAsk your school to complete SDU’s Statement of Hours form and collect grade transcripts for the last three years. Consider registering for uniTEST, which SDU recommends.
  3. Apply on optagelse.dkApply by 15 March 2027 at 12:00 noon Danish time, ranking SDU Mechatronics among up to 8 choices, and upload your documents.
  4. Upload results and acceptUpload your final Leaving Cert results as soon as they are issued in late August, as SDU instructs, then accept your offer and look for housing in Sønderborg.
Deadline for Irish/EU applicants: Applicants with a foreign (non-Danish) exam such as the Leaving Certificate apply on optagelse.dk by 15 March at 12:00 noon Danish time (the date SDU publishes for the current cycle; confirm the 2027 date). Final Leaving Cert results are uploaded later when SDU asks for them..

Costs

  • No tuition fees for full-degree students from EU/EEA countries and Switzerland, so Irish citizens pay nothing. Non-EU/EEA students pay EUR 17,300 per year, paid a full year in advance.
This programme is taught in Sønderborg, a small town on the German border, not in Odense. All qualified applicants were admitted in 2026, but you must still meet the Danish subject-level requirements and apply by 15 March.
