Entry requirements for Irish students

  • SDU accepts the Leaving Certificate (Established). Leaving Cert applicants are assessed on grades only, but SDU recommends taking its admission test (uniTEST) because GPA thresholds can change from year to year. LCVP applicants must take uniTEST. For Quota 1 you need a GPA equal to 7.0 or higher on the Danish scale. SDU does not publish how Higher and Ordinary Level map to Danish A/B/C levels, so confirm with SDU admissions and do not assume Ordinary Level will count.
  • Specific requirements: Mathematics at Danish A level, English at Danish B level, and either Physics at B level or Geoscience at A level. Maths A is the advanced level, so expect to need Higher Level Maths, and Leaving Cert Physics for the physics requirement. Confirm with SDU how your subjects count. Places are split 65/35 between Quota 1 (grades) and Quota 2 (admission test).
  • English: English at Danish B level. SDU’s language-requirement page lists IELTS Academic 6.5, TOEFL iBT 88 and Cambridge C1 Advanced 180 (or C2 Proficiency) as accepted tests. Duolingo is not listed. Ask SDU whether Leaving Cert English is enough on its own. Upload proof of English by 5 July.

How to apply

  1. Check subject requirements (autumn 2026)You need Maths at Danish A level, English at B level and Physics at B level (or Geoscience at A level). Ask SDU admissions which Leaving Cert subjects and levels meet these.
  2. Apply on optagelse.dk by 15 March 2027Apply by 12:00 noon Danish time. Upload your Leaving Certificate documents, grade transcripts for the last 3 years and SDU’s Statement of Hours form.
  3. Consider the uniTEST admission testSDU recommends that Leaving Cert applicants also take uniTEST. It gives you a chance in Quota 2 if your grades fall short of the Quota 1 threshold. Follow the instructions SDU sends after you apply.
  4. Proof of English, final results and housingUpload proof of English by 5 July at 12:00 noon. Leaving Cert results come out in late August, so ask admissions how to submit your final results. Start looking for accommodation in Sønderborg early.
Deadline for Irish/EU applicants: Applicants with a foreign exam, including the Irish Leaving Certificate, apply on optagelse.dk by 15 March at 12:00 noon Danish time. SDU says documents such as proof of English should be uploaded to optagelse.dk by 5 July at 12:00 noon. These are SDU’s current rules; confirm the 2027 dates on SDU’s site and optagelse.dk..

Costs

  • EU/EEA and Nordic citizens, including Irish citizens, pay no tuition fees. Non-EU/EEA students pay EUR 17,300 per year (SDU figure, September 2026). There is no application fee on optagelse.dk.
Tuition is free for EU students, including Irish students. The main hurdle is the Maths A-level requirement, so check with SDU how Leaving Cert Higher Level Maths and Physics count before you apply. In 2026 every qualified applicant got a place.
