Entry requirements for Irish students

  • Denmark accepts the Irish Leaving Certificate as an upper secondary school-leaving qualification, but this programme sets subject requirements at Danish levels, each passed with at least 2.0 on the Danish scale. VIA does not publish how Leaving Cert subjects map to Danish levels, so confirm with VIA admissions before applying.
  • Mathematics is required at Danish A-level (375 hours). This is VIA’s highest maths level, so expect to need Higher Level Maths, and confirm with VIA. VIA also publishes a maths prerequisites document for this programme.
  • Physics is required at Danish B-level (or Geoscience at A-level), so you will need Leaving Cert Physics. Confirm with VIA whether Ordinary or Higher Level is accepted.
  • English is required at Danish B-level (210 hours in the final three years of school). VIA accepts either school records or a test (IELTS Academic 6.5, Cambridge C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency 180). VIA lists no automatic exemption for native speakers, so check with VIA that Leaving Cert English is accepted.

Costs

  • No tuition fee. VIA states that students from EU and EEA countries are exempt from tuition fees in Denmark, so Irish citizens pay nothing. You will still need to budget for living costs in Horsens.
Apply on optagelse.dk by 15 March. CAO points do not apply: eligibility depends on Danish subject levels, and you will need strong Maths (Danish A-level), Physics and English.
