About the course

An English-taught Bachelor of Engineering (diplomingeniør) in mechanical engineering at VIA’s Horsens campus. It lasts 3.5 years (7 semesters). Semesters 1 to 4 cover mechanics, machine design, materials, electrical engineering and automation. Semester 5 is a 20-week internship, which can be in Denmark or abroad, and semesters 6 and 7 cover your specialisation and bachelor’s project. VIA says graduates work in offshore and wind energy, energy, consulting engineering, R&D, manufacturing and transport.

Entry requirements for Irish students

  • Denmark accepts the Irish Leaving Certificate as an EU school-leaving qualification. VIA requires an upper secondary school leaving certificate with a minimum grade average equivalent to 2.0 on the Danish scale, plus specific subjects at Danish levels (A, B, C). VIA’s EU admissions page does not mention the Leaving Cert specifically; it refers applicants to the Danish Ministry of Higher Education and Science for assessment of foreign qualifications. Ask VIA admissions how your Leaving Cert subjects and levels will be converted.
  • Subject requirements: Mathematics equivalent to Danish A-level, Physics equivalent to B-level (or Geoscience A), and Chemistry equivalent to C-level (or Biotechnology A). Plan on Higher Level Maths, and take Physics and Chemistry, or Physics and Chemistry combined, to Leaving Cert. VIA has not confirmed how Leaving Cert levels map to Danish levels, so check with VIA before applying.
  • English equivalent to Danish B-level is required. VIA defines this as at least 210 hours of English over the final three years of upper secondary school with a grade average of at least 2.0 on the Danish scale. It also accepts IELTS Academic 6.5, TOEFL iBT 94 (for tests taken before 21 January 2026) or Cambridge C1/C2 180. VIA says all applicants must meet the requirement and lists no exemption for native speakers, so confirm with VIA that Leaving Cert English is accepted.

How to apply

  1. Confirm the requirementsBefore February 2027, ask VIA admissions how Higher Level Maths, Physics/Chemistry and Leaving Cert English map to Danish Maths A, Physics B, Chemistry C and English B.
  2. Apply on optagelse.dkBetween 1 February and 15 March 2027 (12:00 noon Danish time), apply on optagelse.dk, listing your choices in order of priority, and upload the documents you have: results so far, English evidence and passport.
  3. Send the signature pageIf you have no Danish CPR number/MitID, print, sign, scan and email the signature page for each VIA programme so VIA receives it before 15 March 2027 at 12:00 noon.
  4. Final results and offerAll documents, including your final diploma, must be uploaded by 5 July at 12:00 noon. That is before Leaving Cert results are issued, so agree with VIA in advance how to submit them. Offers are sent on 28 July; accept your place by the stated deadline or you lose it. Study starts in August 2027.
Deadline for Irish/EU applicants: Optagelse.dk opens for applications on 1 February, and the application deadline is 15 March at 12:00 noon Danish time. VIA’s programme page says the portal ‘opens on 1 February every year’, so expect 1 February to 15 March 2027. You can submit an incomplete application by 15 March, but all documents, including your final diploma, must be uploaded by 5 July at 12:00 noon. If you have no Danish CPR number/MitID, VIA must also receive your signed signature page(s) before 15 March at 12:00 noon. Offers are sent on 28 July (or the Friday before if 28 July falls on a weekend). Study starts in August..

Costs

  • VIA’s EU admissions page says students from EU and EEA countries do not pay tuition fees in Denmark, so Irish citizens pay no tuition. You pay your own living and housing costs.
You need Maths at Danish A-level, so plan on Higher Level Maths, with Physics and Chemistry. The course includes a 20-week internship in semester 5. The 15 March 2027 deadline and VIA’s 5 July documentation deadline both come before Irish results are issued, so contact VIA early about submitting your Leaving Cert.
