About the course

An English-taught law degree (240 ECTS): 60 ECTS core, 111 mandatory, 57 elective and a 12 ECTS final project. There is an optional 48 ECTS concentration in Spanish Business Law (Mención en Derecho Español de los Negocios), which is taught in Spanish. You can study all four years in Madrid, or start with two years in Segovia and finish in Madrid.

Entry requirements for Irish students

  • IE is a private university and assesses the Leaving Certificate through its own admissions process (school results, admissions test, interview). Under Spanish law (Royal Decree 534/2024), students from EU systems such as Ireland do not sit the Spanish PAU, but you must meet the entry rules for Irish universities. As a guide, UCD’s matriculation minimum is six subjects, with at least H5 in two and O6/H7 in the other four, including English and Irish. For students from EU systems, IE asks for the UNED (UNEDasiss) accreditation and other legal access documents before 15 October of first year. Confirm exact document requirements with IE admissions.
  • Admissions test: IE’s own online test, conducted only in English, covering verbal, logical and numerical skills. IE presents it as an alternative to tests such as SAT or LNAT, so check with IE which external tests and minimum scores it accepts. You may also be invited to a personal interview.
  • English: IE usually exempts students who studied in an English-speaking education system, so Irish-educated students should not normally need a separate English test. Confirm with IE.

How to apply

  1. Apply onlineComplete IE’s online application (transcripts, recommendation, written answers) and pay the €150 admission fee. Aim for an early round: Round 1 closes 6 Nov 2026.
  2. Admissions testTake the IE admissions test in English, or ask IE whether it will accept an external score such as SAT or LNAT.
  3. Assessment and interviewComplete any interview IE asks for, then wait for the decision. It arrives by the date set for your round (for example, 11 Dec 2026 for Round 1).
  4. Accept and enrolPay the €3,000 reservation fee to secure your place. Then send your UNEDasiss accreditation and other documents to IE before 15 October 2027.
Deadline for Irish/EU applicants: IE admits students in rounds. For September 2027 entry the official rounds are: Early Round closed 18 Sep 2026 (decisions by 23 Oct 2026); Round 1 closes 6 Nov 2026 (decisions by 11 Dec 2026); Round 2 closes 15 Jan 2027 (decisions by 19 Feb 2027); Round 3 closes 5 Mar 2027 (decisions by 23 Apr 2027). From May 2027, applications may still be considered if places remain. Earlier rounds have more places..

Costs

  • IE’s official pages list €26,500 a year (€441.67 per ECTS) for 2026/27, with fees adjusted every year of the degree. For students starting in 2026/27, the rise is a fixed 2.9% a year. The 2027/28 fee has not been published yet, so confirm it with IE. IE is a private university, so the same fee applies to EU and non-EU students. One-off costs: a €150 admission fee, a €3,000 non-refundable place reservation fee, and a single €1,200 IE Foundation contribution in first year. IE says full tuition should be paid by 2 October of the year you enrol.
This is a Spanish law degree at a private university with high fees (€26,500 a year in 2026/27). If you want to practise law in Ireland, check with the Law Society of Ireland or King’s Inns how a Spanish LL.B. is treated before you commit.
