About the course

An English-taught Bachelor of Engineering in industrial mechanical engineering, offered at LAB’s Lappeenranta campus (LAB also lists a Lahti contact). It uses ‘Open Engineering’ methods: students explore different engineering areas and build their own learning path with support from a coach.

Entry requirements for Irish students

  • LAB does not mention the Irish Leaving Certificate by name. It asks for a secondary-level diploma that gives eligibility for higher education, so a completed Leaving Cert that meets Irish entry rules should make you eligible, and CAO points are not used. Confirm with LAB admissions.
  • LAB’s rolling admission ranks applicants on school grades or SAT, not by an entrance exam. For the January 2027 intake, engineering applicants with schooling from outside Finland needed a grade average of at least 75%, or SAT scores of at least 600 in Evidence-Based Reading and Writing and 550 in Maths. LAB says the autumn 2027 criteria will be published later.
  • English: LAB accepts education completed in English in Ireland or another EU/EEA country as proof of English. Otherwise you need IELTS Academic 6.5 overall (no band below 5.5) or TOEFL iBT 90 (writing at least 22). Gaelscoil students should expect to need a test.

How to apply

  1. Check the programme pageConfirm that the programme runs in 2027, which campus it is on, its application period and the autumn 2027 selection criteria.
  2. Prepare documentsGet your Leaving Cert documents or predicted grades and a school letter confirming you were taught and assessed in English.
  3. Apply on StudyinfoApply through LAB’s rolling admission on Studyinfo as early as possible in the period, because places are offered on a rolling basis.
  4. Confirm the certificate deadlineAsk LAB when your final Leaving Cert certificate is due, because results come out in late August.
Deadline for Irish/EU applicants: LAB fills its English-taught bachelor’s programmes through rolling admission, not the January joint application. In the last round, this programme’s application period was 1 November 2025 to 31 March 2026. The 2027 period has not been confirmed. LAB’s sister engineering programmes are open from 2 November 2026 to 30 April 2027 for an August 2027 start, so check the programme page for this course’s own dates..

Costs

  • LAB charges no tuition to EU/EEA students on its English-taught bachelor’s programmes. Only students from outside the EU/EEA pay fees, and only they pay an application fee. Confirm the fee on the programme page.
LAB fills this course through rolling admission, so apply early in the period. The 2027 application dates were not confirmed, so check the programme page before relying on this entry.
