About the course

An English-taught engineering degree on the Lappeenranta campus. It is 180 ECTS over three years, leading to a Bachelor of Science (Technology), and is followed by a 120 ECTS master’s for a Master of Science (Technology) (3 + 2 years in total). It covers the basics of chemistry, natural sciences and technology, and processes in the chemical industry, especially separation methods and process design. Applications include green energy production, energy storage and the use of biomass and raw materials.

Entry requirements for Irish students

  • For school qualifications from outside Finland, LUT asks for an upper secondary qualification plus either an English language test or a SAT/OMPT result. Rolling admission is non-competitive: if you meet all the requirements you are admitted while places remain. LUT does not publish minimum Leaving Cert grades, Higher/Ordinary levels or a points conversion, and CAO points are not used. A completed Leaving Certificate that gives university entry in Ireland should count as an upper secondary qualification, but confirm this with LUT admissions.
  • LUT’s technology rolling admission criteria page has sections on applying with a SAT test, with the Online Mathematics Placement Test (OMPT) or with a ‘mathematics curriculum’. We could not read the minimum scores or which school maths curricula count, so ask LUT whether Leaving Cert Higher Level Maths is accepted.
  • English: the criteria page separately covers when an English test result is required and when it is not, so some applicants are exempt. Check whether Irish schooling or Leaving Cert English exempts you, or whether you need a test such as IELTS or TOEFL.

How to apply

  1. Check the criteriaRead LUT’s admission criteria for technology bachelor’s programmes (rolling admission): the maths route (SAT, OMPT or maths curriculum) and when an English test is required.
  2. Book a testIf you need the SAT, OMPT or an English test, take it early in sixth year so the result is ready.
  3. Apply onlineComplete LUT’s online rolling admission application between 1 Sep 2026 and 30 Apr 2027, choosing Chemical and Process Engineering. You can apply to only one programme at a time, and places go while they last, so apply early.
  4. Send documentsUpload your school documents and test results. Confirm with LUT the deadline for final results, since Leaving Cert results come out in August.
Deadline for Irish/EU applicants: LUT’s international rolling admission for autumn 2027 runs from 1 September 2026 at 08:00 to 30 April 2027 at 23:59 (UTC+3), unless the programme fills earlier..

Costs

  • No tuition fees for EU/EEA citizens, including Irish students. Non-EU/EEA students pay EUR 12,000 a year (with a EUR 2,000 early bird discount in the first year) and a EUR 100 application fee. You still pay your own living costs in Finland.
LUT admits eligible international applicants without competition between 1 September 2026 and 30 April 2027 while places last. What matters most is applying early with the right test result (English test, SAT or OMPT) and checking the technology criteria for how Leaving Cert maths is treated.
