About the course

An English-taught electrical engineering degree covering power systems, electrical drives, electrical circuits, digital electronics and mechatronics. It is taught at the Lappeenranta campus, and graduates can go straight on to LUT master’s programmes such as Electrical Engineering or Electric Transportation Systems.

Entry requirements for Irish students

  • In Finland, a foreign school-leaving qualification counts if it gives university entry in the country where you got it. LUT asks for an upper secondary qualification that gives university eligibility in your home country, completed by 31 August 2027, so a Leaving Certificate that meets Irish university entry rules should qualify. LUT does not use CAO points. There is no competitive ranking: if you meet the requirements you get an offer, as long as places are left.
  • To be eligible you need either the grade averages or a test score. On LUT’s EU/EEA criteria page, Electrical Engineering asks for an overall average of 70%, 80% in advanced maths and 80% in physics/chemistry. LUT does not say how Leaving Cert grades (H1-H8, O1-O8) are converted, so confirm with LUT admissions. Instead of grades you can use a test: SAT 1300 (EBRW 600, Math 700), ACT 28 (English 49, Math 30) or LUT’s Online Mathematics Placement Test at 60% or more, with at most two attempts. You must also upload your school’s maths curriculum.
  • English: the programme page asks international applicants for a language test or SAT/OMPT. Ireland is not on LUT’s list of school diplomas that prove English, and the page on exemptions could not be read. Before you apply, ask LUT whether your Irish schooling in English is enough. Gaelscoil students should expect to need IELTS or TOEFL.

How to apply

  1. Check your route (Sept-Dec 2026)Decide whether you will qualify on grades (overall 70%, maths 80%, physics/chemistry 80%) or by test. Ask LUT admissions how Leaving Cert grades are converted and whether you need an English test.
  2. Book tests earlyIf you are using SAT, ACT or LUT’s OMPT, sit it in good time. SAT needs 1300 (Math 700) and OMPT needs 60%, with at most two attempts.
  3. Apply on Studyinfo.fiThe application is open 1 September 2026 to 30 April 2027. Choose the regular programme, not the HEBUT double degree version. Upload your transcript, maths curriculum, passport and any test results, and apply early before places fill.
  4. Finish and send final resultsFinish the Leaving Cert by 31 August 2027 and send your final certificate as LUT tells you. Studies start in Lappeenranta at the end of August 2027.
Deadline for Irish/EU applicants: International rolling admission for autumn 2027 entry runs from 1 September 2026 (08:00 Finnish time) to 30 April 2027 (23:59 Finnish time). Applications are assessed as they arrive, and the programme can close early if all places are filled. You can apply before finishing school if you will complete your upper secondary qualification by 31 August 2027. Studies start at the end of August 2027..

Costs

  • No tuition fees for EU/EEA students. Non-EU students pay EUR 12,000 a year, and LUT lists a EUR 100 application fee for them. LUT’s pages do not mention an application fee for EU applicants. Any SAT or ACT test fees are paid separately to the test organiser.
LUT makes offers first-come to anyone who meets its grade or test thresholds, so an early, complete application matters more than competing with others. Make sure you pick the regular Electrical Engineering programme, not the separate HEBUT double degree, and note that it is taught in Lappeenranta, not Lahti.
