About the course

A three-year, 180 ECTS bachelor’s in mechanical engineering, taught in English with contact teaching on LUT’s Lappeenranta campus. There is a separate double-degree version with Hebei University of Technology, which is not covered here.

Entry requirements for Irish students

  • Finland accepts a completed school-leaving qualification that gives university entry in the country where it was awarded, so a Leaving Certificate that meets Irish entry rules should make you eligible. LUT does not publish how it converts Leaving Cert grades into its GPA percentages. It does not use CAO points. Confirm with admissions@lut.fi.
  • Admission is based on meeting set thresholds, not on competing with other applicants. For technology programmes (2026 criteria) you need an overall GPA of 70% with 80% in advanced maths and 80% in physics/chemistry. Alternatively you can qualify with SAT 1300 (Maths 700, EBRW 600), ACT 28, or LUT’s Online Mathematics Placement Test (OMPT, at least 60%, maximum two attempts). It has not been confirmed whether Higher Level maths counts as ‘advanced’.
  • English: Ireland is not on LUT’s list of countries whose school diplomas prove English. Expect to submit TOEFL, IELTS, Cambridge or Duolingo results unless LUT confirms an exemption.

How to apply

  1. Check thresholds earlyIn autumn 2026, email admissions@lut.fi. Ask how Leaving Cert grades convert to their GPA percentages, whether Higher Level maths counts as advanced maths, and whether you need an English test.
  2. Plan a test routeIf your grades may fall short, take the SAT (1300+, Maths 700+) or LUT’s OMPT (60%+). Book an English test if one is required.
  3. Apply earlyApply through LUT’s rolling admission between 1 Sep 2026 and 30 Apr 2027. Upload your transcript, maths curriculum, passport and any test results.
  4. Send final resultsYou can be admitted if you will finish school by 31 Aug 2027. Send your Leaving Cert results as soon as they are issued in August, then arrive for the start of term in late August.
Deadline for Irish/EU applicants: International rolling admission for autumn 2027 entry runs 1 September 2026 to 30 April 2027 at 23:59 Finnish time (UTC+3), unless the programme fills earlier. Places are given to eligible applicants in order while they last. Studies start in late August..

Costs

  • No tuition fee for EU/EEA citizens. LUT charges non-EU/EEA students EUR 12,000 a year and a EUR 100 application fee (2026 figures); neither applies to Irish citizens.
Make sure you apply to the regular programme, not the HEBUT double-degree version. Places go first-come to applicants who meet the thresholds, so apply early.
