About the course

A four-year (240 ECTS) Bachelor of Engineering in information technology, taught entirely in English as day-time studies at Metropolia’s Karamalmi campus. Students choose a major in Smart IoT Systems or Software Engineering. Metropolia describes it as an intensive programme needing around 40 hours of work a week.

Entry requirements for Irish students

  • Finland accepts a completed Leaving Certificate if it gives you entry to higher education in Ireland. No Finnish body sets minimum Leaving Cert grades, subjects or Higher/Ordinary levels, and CAO points are not converted. Confirm with Metropolia admissions.
  • Metropolia lists the International UAS Exam (23 March 2027) among the selection methods for this programme, so Leaving Cert holders are usually ranked by that exam rather than school grades. Check the exact selection methods on the programme’s Studyinfo.fi page.
  • English: universities of applied sciences accept an upper secondary qualification completed in English in an EU/EEA country, or IELTS Academic 6.0 or TOEFL iBT (minimum shown on uasinfo.fi). Proof is due by 28 January 2027. Ask your school for a letter confirming your Leaving Cert studies were in English. Gaelscoil students should expect to need IELTS or TOEFL.

How to apply

  1. Check Studyinfo.fiFrom December 2026, open the programme’s Studyinfo.fi entry (linked from the Metropolia page) and confirm the selection methods for the January 2027 round.
  2. Apply on Studyinfo.fiSubmit your application between 7 and 21 January 2027 (closes 15:00 Finnish time).
  3. Prove your EnglishUpload your English proof (school letter or IELTS/TOEFL) by 28 January 2027.
  4. Sit the International UAS ExamTake the online exam on 23 March 2027. Offers to school leavers are conditional on your final Leaving Cert results.
Deadline for Irish/EU applicants: Apply in Finland’s spring joint application on Studyinfo.fi, 7 January 2027 (08:00) to 21 January 2027 (15:00 Finnish time), for studies starting in autumn 2027. Proof of English must be submitted by 28 January 2027 (15:00 Finnish time). The International UAS Exam is on 23 March 2027 (online)..

Costs

  • No tuition fees for EU/EEA citizens. Metropolia’s tuition fee (11,500 euro a year for studies starting after 31 July 2027) applies only to non-EU/EEA degree students, and the 100 euro application fee is also only for non-EU applicants.
Your Leaving Cert grades are unlikely to be used for ranking: you compete mainly through the International UAS Exam. Metropolia also runs Information Technology in a separate international application (SAT/ACT, GMAT/GRE or credit transfer based) and a separate IT top-up degree, so make sure you apply for the full bachelor’s programme in the January joint application.
