About the course

A 270-credit (4.5-year) marine engineering degree covering mechanical engineering, seamanship, ship technology and electrical engineering. It is taught in English at the Aboa Mare maritime campus in Turku, with training on simulators, in workshops and through supervised service on board ship, and leads towards engineer officer certification.

Entry requirements for Irish students

  • Finnish universities of applied sciences accept a foreign school qualification that gives eligibility for higher education in the country where it was awarded, so a completed Leaving Certificate that meets Irish entry rules should make you eligible. Novia sets no minimum Leaving Cert grades (H1-H8, O1-O8), subjects or levels, and CAO points are not converted. Confirm with Novia admissions.
  • Novia’s certificate-based selection for this course only uses the Finnish matriculation exam, and IB, EB or German Abitur completed in Finland, so Leaving Cert students are ranked through the International UAS Exam (23 March 2027) or Novia’s own on-site entrance exam, not their grades.
  • English: you must prove B2-level English with an internationally recognised test or previous studies, and upload the proof with your application. The UAS rules accept EU schooling taught and assessed entirely in English if your documents show this, so ask your school for a letter confirming it. Gaelscoil students should plan on IELTS or TOEFL.

How to apply

  1. Check the October updateLook out for Novia’s details of its on-site entrance exam, due in October 2026. Arrange a school letter confirming you were taught and assessed in English, or book an English test.
  2. Apply on Studyinfo.fiSubmit the joint application between 7 and 21 January 2027, choosing Novia Maritime Technology (daytime studies, Turku), and upload your proof of English.
  3. Sit the entrance examSit the online International UAS Exam on 23 March 2027, or Novia’s on-site entrance exam if you choose that route.
  4. Accept and get your medicalIf you are offered a place, accept it on Studyinfo.fi, send your final Leaving Cert results and submit a seafarer’s medical certificate covering eyesight, hearing, colour vision and general fitness.
Deadline for Irish/EU applicants: Spring 2027 joint application on Studyinfo.fi: 7 to 21 January 2027. Leaving Cert applicants are selected through the online International UAS Exam on 23 March 2027 or Novia’s own on-site entrance exam, which Novia says it will publish details of in October 2026. Proof of English must be uploaded with the application. Check Studyinfo.fi for the exact closing time and the deadline for documents..

Costs

  • Tuition-free for EU citizens: Novia states that the studies are free for EU citizens. Only non-EU/EEA students pay tuition. You will still need to pay your own living costs in Turku, and after admission you must get a seafarer’s medical certificate at your own expense.
This course trains ship engineer officers, so after you are admitted you must pass a seafarer’s medical covering eyesight, hearing and colour vision, and you will do supervised time at sea. Your Leaving Cert points are not used: your place depends on the International UAS Exam or Novia’s own entrance exam.
