Entry requirements for Irish students

  • Savonia accepts a foreign qualification that gives eligibility for higher education in the country where it was awarded, so a completed Leaving Certificate that meets Irish entry rules should make you eligible. Savonia publishes nothing specific on the Leaving Cert: no minimum H or O grades, no subject rules and no CAO points conversion, so confirm with admissions@savonia.fi.
  • Places are awarded through one of four routes: certificate grades (overall GPA of at least 60%, first come first served; Savonia does not say how Leaving Cert grades are converted), SAT scores, the International UAS Exam (23 March 2027) or Savonia’s own entrance exam in Varkaus (8 April 2027). No specific maths requirement is published on the programme page.
  • English must be proven even by native speakers. Savonia accepts upper secondary education completed in English in the EU/EEA, or tests such as IELTS Academic 6.0, TOEFL iBT 60, PTE Academic 55 or Cambridge 169. The Leaving Cert certificate does not state the language of instruction, so get a school letter confirming you were taught and assessed in English. Gaelscoil students should expect to need IELTS or TOEFL.

How to apply

  1. Choose your route (Oct 2026-Jan 2027)Decide between direct application (certificate grades or SAT, opens 1 October 2026, rolling until full), the International UAS Exam via Studyinfo.fi, or Savonia’s own entrance exam in Varkaus.
  2. ApplyJoint application on Studyinfo.fi 7-21 January 2027, or Savonia’s entrance exam application 7 January-23 March 2027. Direct applications are processed in order of arrival, so apply as early as possible from 1 October 2026.
  3. Upload documents and English proofUpload certificates or transcripts and proof of English (for example a school letter confirming English-medium schooling, or IELTS/TOEFL). Joint application deadline is 28 January 2027; entrance exam route deadline is 1 April 2027.
  4. Sit the exam and submit your final certificateInternational UAS Exam 23 March 2027 or entrance exam 8 April 2027 in Varkaus. If offered a conditional place, the final certificate is due by 13 July 2027 (joint application) or 31 July 2027 (direct application).
Deadline for Irish/EU applicants: Several routes for autumn 2027 entry. Direct application (certificate grades or SAT): opens 1 October 2026 and runs to 31 July 2027 at the latest, but places are filled in order of arrival and the route closes when groups are full, so apply early. Joint application with the International UAS Exam: apply on Studyinfo.fi 7-21 January 2027 (3pm Finnish time), attachments and English proof by 28 January 2027, exam on 23 March 2027, results by 14 April 2027. Savonia’s own entrance exam: apply 7 January-23 March 2027 (3pm Finnish time), documents by 1 April 2027, exam in person at Varkaus campus on 8 April 2027 (not online), results by end of April 2027. Studies start end of August 2027..

Costs

  • No tuition fee for EU/EEA citizens. Savonia charges tuition only to non-EU/EEA students (EUR 9,700 a year for those starting after 1 January 2027, with an early-payment rate of EUR 7,760 for the first year). The application fee also applies only to applicants from outside the EU, EEA or Switzerland. Budget for living costs in Finland.
Savonia’s final-certificate deadlines (13 July 2027 for the joint application, 31 July 2027 for direct application) fall before Leaving Cert results are normally issued in August, so a student sitting the Leaving Cert in June 2027 should contact admissions@savonia.fi before applying; this route suits students who already hold their results. The course is at the Varkaus campus, not in Kuopio.
