About the course

A four-year, 240-credit engineering degree in information technology with a specialisation in the Internet of Things. It covers software design, electronics and electrical engineering, wireless devices, cloud-based IoT, cybersecurity, big data and AI. It includes a 30-credit internship and a thesis, and international students take compulsory Finnish language courses.

Entry requirements for Irish students

  • Savonia accepts any school qualification that gives eligibility for higher education in the country where it was awarded, so a completed Leaving Certificate that meets Irish entry rules should count. Neither Savonia nor any other Finnish body sets minimum Leaving Cert grades, subjects or Higher/Ordinary levels, and CAO points are not converted. Confirm with admissions@savonia.fi.
  • For 2027, Savonia’s own entrance exam (8 April 2027, in person in Kuopio) is the confirmed route for this programme, and your place depends on your exam result. You don’t need to have studied IT before. Savonia’s certificate-grades route asks for an overall average of at least 60% and copies of your final certificates, and it closes on 31 July 2027 at the latest. Leaving Cert results usually come out after that date, and Savonia has not said whether this programme uses the certificate-grades route.
  • Native English speakers still have to prove their English. Savonia accepts upper secondary education completed in an EU country if it was taught and assessed entirely in English and the language is clearly shown on your documents. The Leaving Cert certificate does not say this, so ask your school for a letter confirming it. Otherwise you need a test such as IELTS Academic (6.0 or higher) or PTE Academic (55 or higher). Gaelscoil students should plan to take IELTS or TOEFL.

  2. Apply by 23 March 2027Submit the entrance exam route application between 7 January and 23 March 2027 (3pm Finnish time).
  3. Send documents by 1 April 2027Upload your school documents and proof of English, such as a school letter confirming you were taught and assessed entirely in English, or an IELTS or PTE result, by 1 April 2027 (3pm Finnish time).
  4. Sit the exam on 8 April 2027Take the entrance exam in person at Microkatu campus, Kuopio. Results come out by the end of April 2027 and studies start at the end of August 2027.
Deadline for Irish/EU applicants: Savonia entrance exam route (the route that lists this programme for 2027): apply 7 January to 23 March 2027 (3pm Finnish time); send attachments, including proof of English, by 1 April 2027 (3pm); entrance exam in person on 8 April 2027 at Microkatu campus, Kuopio; results by the end of April 2027; studies start at the end of August 2027. Savonia also runs a spring 2027 joint application (7 to 21 January 2027, International UAS Exam on 23 March 2027, attachments by 28 January 2027, results by 14 April 2027), but its pages do not yet say whether this programme is in it..

Costs

  • No tuition fee for EU/EEA citizens (Irish citizens included). Only non-EU/EEA students pay (EUR 9,700 a year from 2027). Savonia charges an application fee only to applicants from outside the EU/EEA/Switzerland. You pay your own travel to Kuopio for the entrance exam and your living costs.
Your Leaving Cert points won’t decide whether you get a place. For 2027 the confirmed route is Savonia’s own entrance exam, sat in person in Kuopio on 8 April 2027, so plan the trip in the middle of Leaving Cert year.
