About the course

A six-year (12-semester, 360 ECTS) medical degree taught in English at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki’s School of Medicine for international students. Compulsory Greek language courses (Greek Language I-VI and Greek Medical Terminology I-II) are part of the curriculum.

Entry requirements for Irish students

  • The university assesses the Irish Leaving Certificate individually and does not publish a fixed Irish requirement. Contact admissions to confirm. (It asks for a high school graduation certificate or IB with an official English translation, a certificate showing eligibility for higher education in your home country, and transcripts of the final two years.)
  • Online admission test: 60 multiple-choice questions on Biology, Chemistry and general knowledge/reasoning, plus an online video interview and a personal statement. Applicants with MediTest-EU results, or A-levels of at least AAB in Chemistry, Biology and one other subject (not English), are exempt from the test.
  • English: IELTS at least 6.0 overall (B2) or TOEFL at least 79/120. The programme is only open to applicants who attended at least the last two years of secondary school outside Greece.

Working in Ireland afterwards

Because your medical degree comes from an EU/EEA country, the Medical Council of Ireland can recognise it automatically under EU Directive 2005/36/EC, as long as it is listed in Annex V (point 5.1.1). If that listing says the degree must come with an internship or state-exam certificate from your home country, you need to have that too, and you must also show your current professional standing and meet the English-language requirements. Graduates of EU/EEA medical schools may apply to the HSE for Irish intern posts, but only if their home-country degree does not already count as complete training. In older HSE intern guides (e.g., the 2022 guide), only graduates from medical schools in Ireland, Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Italy, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Poland, Portugal, Iceland and Slovenia could apply. Graduates from other EEA countries (and Italians holding the ‘abilitante’ degree) were told they are not eligible, because they qualify directly for General registration. Applicants who need no work permit were matched before those who do. Please check the current eligibility list in the HSE intern guide for the year you apply. We could not confirm it for the July 2027 intake because the current HSE guide pages are password-protected.

Deadline for Irish/EU applicants: Two application rounds for the 2027-2028 academic year: first round 9 November 2026 to 29 January 2027; second round 22 March 2027 to 31 May 2027. After applying, an admissions adviser contacts you within three working days; eligible applicants take an online video interview and an online multiple-choice admission test. Specific interview and test dates are not published. Places cannot be deferred..

Costs

  • EUR 12,000 per academic year, paid in two instalments. The first EUR 6,000 instalment is due on acceptance as a non-refundable admission deposit; the second is due at the end of the winter semester. Candidates who must sit the admission test pay a EUR 1,200 deposit before the exam, which is refunded if they are rejected and deducted from fees if admitted; admitted candidates then pay a further EUR 4,800 to complete registration. No separate application fee is listed. The fee applies to all students on this English-language programme, including EU citizens. The university states no scholarships are available at the moment.
Because the degree comes from an EU country, the Medical Council of Ireland can recognise it automatically under Directive 2005/36/EC if it is listed in Annex V (point 5.1.1), with any required home-country internship or state-exam certificate, proof of current professional standing and English-language requirements; check the current HSE intern guide for whether Greek graduates can apply for Irish intern posts. Greek language courses are compulsory within the degree.
