About the course

A six-year (12-semester) medical degree for international (non-Greek) students, taught and examined entirely in English and organised into basic, pre-clinical and clinical cycles. Clinical clerkships take place in semesters 9 to 12, where you need Greek to speak with patients.

Entry requirements for Irish students

  • The university assesses the Irish Leaving Certificate individually and does not publish a fixed Irish requirement. Contact admissions to confirm. For national school-leaving certificates in general, it asks for at least 80% overall, including Biology plus two of Chemistry, Mathematics or Physics, with more than 80% in each of those subjects. It also accepts alternatives such as MCAT, UCAT, SAT, AP sciences, a BSc in medical sciences or a pre-med programme.
  • There is no written entrance exam. You apply online with your passport or ID, school certificate (or proof you are in your final year), final-year grade report (with English translations where needed), English certificate, motivation letter and CV. Shortlisted applicants have an online interview.
  • English at B2 level or higher, for example TOEFL 79/120 or IELTS 6.5.

Working in Ireland afterwards

Because your medical degree comes from an EU/EEA country, the Medical Council of Ireland can recognise it automatically under EU Directive 2005/36/EC, as long as it is listed in Annex V (point 5.1.1). If that listing says the degree must come with an internship or state-exam certificate from your home country, you need to have that too, and you must also show your current professional standing and meet the English-language requirements. Graduates of EU/EEA medical schools may apply to the HSE for Irish intern posts, but only if their home-country degree does not already count as complete training. In older HSE intern guides (e.g., the 2022 guide), only graduates from medical schools in Ireland, Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Italy, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Poland, Portugal, Iceland and Slovenia could apply. Graduates from other EEA countries (and Italians holding the ‘abilitante’ degree) were told they are not eligible, because they qualify directly for General registration. Applicants who need no work permit were matched before those who do. Please check the current eligibility list in the HSE intern guide for the year you apply. We could not confirm it for the July 2027 intake because the current HSE guide pages are password-protected.

How to apply

  1. Check eligibilityThe programme is for non-Greek citizens who finished their last two years of secondary school outside Greece. Aim for more than 80% in Biology and two of Chemistry, Maths or Physics, and email admissions to confirm how they will read your Leaving Certificate grades.
  2. Prepare documentsGather a copy of your passport, your school certificate or proof that you are in your final year, your final-year grade report, an IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL 79 certificate (or other B2 proof), a motivation letter and a CV.
  3. Apply onlineSubmit the university’s online application form by the early deadline in November 2026 or the regular deadline in March 2027. Exact dates are not published, so check the admissions page.
  4. Interview and acceptIf you are shortlisted, attend the online interview. If you get an offer, pay the EUR 3,000 deposit to accept your place, then EUR 6,000 before each semester. The academic year starts in the last week of September 2027.
Deadline for Irish/EU applicants: Two rounds: an Early Application period with its deadline ‘within November’ and a Regular Application period with its deadline ‘within March’. The admissions page does not give exact dates. The early round has only a limited number of places. Roughly four times as many applicants as there are places are invited to an online interview, and there may be two interview rounds. In the 2026/27 cycle, regular-round decisions were due by the end of April. The academic year starts in the last week of September..

Costs

  • EUR 15,000 per academic year, charged to all students on this English-taught programme, including EU students. In first year you pay a non-refundable EUR 3,000 deposit on acceptance, then EUR 6,000 before each semester. From second year you pay half the annual fee before each semester. The first-semester payment (EUR 6,000) is refunded only if you withdraw by 31 August. The admissions page does not mention an application fee. The page gives no academic year for the fee, so confirm it for 2027/28.
Because your medical degree comes from an EU/EEA country, the Medical Council of Ireland can recognise it automatically under Directive 2005/36/EC, as long as it is listed in Annex V; Greece was not on the older HSE intern-eligibility list, so check the current HSE intern guide before relying on an Irish intern post. Teaching is in English, but you need Greek to talk to patients in the clinical cycle, and the programme provides intensive Greek courses to reach B2 by the end of the pre-clinical cycle.

Checked against the official University of Crete iMED website: September 2026 (2027 entry). The admissions page does not name an academic year, and the homepage still refers to the closed 2026-27 cycle, so the fee and deadlines are the current published figures. Confirm the 2027/28 dates and fee with the university. Always confirm details with the university before applying.
