About the course

A three-year English-taught degree (180 ECTS, Bachelor of Arts) covering sport, exercise, coaching and sport management in Groningen. It is a practical, career-focused degree at a university of applied sciences.

Entry requirements for Irish students

  • The institution assesses the Irish Leaving Certificate individually and does not publish a fixed Irish requirement. Contact admissions to confirm.
  • You need a school-leaving qualification comparable to the Dutch VWO (pre-university) diploma. Hanze does not say what this means in Leaving Cert grades. If your schooling was in English in Ireland, Hanze’s general rules exempt you from an English test.
  • You must pass a compulsory online Matching Day (including a motivation letter) and then a Sports Medical Fitness Test with a sports physician (orthopaedic, internal and neurological screening, about 40 minutes, about €190).

How to apply

  1. Apply on StudielinkRegister for Sport Studies on Studielink before 15 June 2027.
  2. Hanze ApplyUpload your Leaving Cert results or predicted grades and your motivation letter in the Hanze portal.
  3. Matching Day and fitness testAttend the compulsory online Matching Day. If you get a sufficient result, book and pass the Sports Medical Fitness Test.
  4. Decision and enrolmentIf you pass both, meet all enrolment conditions by 1 September 2027 and pay your tuition fee.
Deadline for Irish/EU applicants: Apply through Studielink before 15 June 2027. You then have to pass the compulsory online Matching Day and the Sports Medical Fitness Test, and complete all enrolment requirements (including paying the fee and uploading your diploma) by 1 September 2027. September start only..

Costs

  • Standard Dutch EU fee: €2,694 (2026/27). The 2027/28 fee is set by the Dutch government each year (expected to be close to €2,800). Hanze also lists extra costs: about €250 a year for books and materials, an Outdoor Experience in Year 1 (about €350), a Wintersport Experience in Year 2 (about €750), and a Sports Medical Fitness Test before admission (about €190, paid directly to the hospital).
  • EU students may be eligible for a Dutch tuition-fee loan (DUO).
This course is not numerus fixus, but you need a sufficient result in the compulsory Matching Day and a pass in the Sports Medical Fitness Test to be admitted.
