About the course

A six-year integrated programme leading to the Doctor of Medicine (MD), taught in English at the University of Split School of Medicine. Applicants choose either Category 1, with all six years in Split, or Category 2, with the first three years in Split and the final three years at Sana Kliniken in Coburg, Germany. You cannot apply for both categories or switch between them after enrolment.

Entry requirements for Irish students

  • The university assesses the Irish Leaving Certificate individually and does not publish a fixed Irish requirement. Contact admissions to confirm. The call requires completed secondary education with passed final exams and at least 12 years of education in total.
  • Selection is based on an application file: certified copies of transcripts and the final certificate, plus a CV and motivation letter in English. The 2026/27 call does not describe an entrance exam or interview, so ask the Student Office whether one applies.
  • Proof of English is listed as an additional document ‘if applicable’. No specific test or score is published.

Working in Ireland afterwards

Because your medical degree comes from an EU/EEA country, the Medical Council of Ireland can recognise it automatically under EU Directive 2005/36/EC, as long as it is listed in Annex V (point 5.1.1). If that listing says the degree must come with an internship or state-exam certificate from your home country, you need to have that too, and you must also show your current professional standing and meet the English-language requirements. Graduates of EU/EEA medical schools may apply to the HSE for Irish intern posts, but only if their home-country degree does not already count as complete training. In older HSE intern guides (e.g., the 2022 guide), only graduates from medical schools in Ireland, Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Italy, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Poland, Portugal, Iceland and Slovenia could apply. Graduates from other EEA countries (and Italians holding the ‘abilitante’ degree) were told they are not eligible, because they qualify directly for General registration. Applicants who need no work permit were matched before those who do. Please check the current eligibility list in the HSE intern guide for the year you apply. We could not confirm it for the July 2027 intake because the current HSE guide pages are password-protected.

How to apply

  1. Prepare documentsGather the application form (stating Category 1 or 2), a CV with photo and a motivation letter in English, your passport, birth certificate, certified copies of school transcripts and Leaving Certificate results, and proof that you paid the EUR 200 application fee. Plain photocopies or scans are not accepted.

Deadline for Irish/EU applicants: For 2026/27 entry the fall intake deadline was 18 August 2026. That call does not list a separate earlier round. The 2027/28 call had not been published when checked, so watch the School of Medicine website for new dates..

Costs

  • EUR 12,000 per year for the 2026/27 intake, as stated in the official call, which gives a single fee with no lower EU rate. There is also a non-refundable EUR 200 application fee. The full tuition fee must be paid within one week of receiving the acceptance letter. Confirm the 2027/28 fee when the new call is published.
Because your medical degree comes from an EU country, the Medical Council of Ireland can recognise it automatically under Directive 2005/36/EC if it is listed in Annex V. You also need any certificates that listing requires, proof of current professional standing and English-language proficiency. Check the current HSE intern guide to see whether Croatian graduates can apply for Irish intern posts. If you choose Category 2, your final three years are spent in Coburg, Germany.
